Question Replace shocks at 50k?

Hello,
So ever since I learned to drive, I've always been told to replace shocks every 50k. Since my IS is my first luxury car, do i still replace theses at 50k? I only ask this because I don't see this on my maintenance manual to either check or replace.
Thank you.

I would say there is no need to preventatively replace shocks at 50k miles - unless they are showing signs of wear (which I would say would be premature for shocks on a non-lowered car). Do an internet search for "signs of worn shocks" and you will find many symptoms of shocks going bad. If you are experiencing any of these, then yes, look to replace. Short of your shocks showing signs or wear, no need to replace until they do, IMO.

I've never heard anyone say shock absorbers should be replaced at any specific interval. I always thought they are replaced when they go bad. It is quite noticeable when shocks go bad in my opinion because of the sound a bad shock makes. I don't believe it'd be unsafe to drive a short distance with a bad shock either. I wouldn't worry about preventatively replacing them for safety reasons. I think they should last well north of 100,000 miles under normal driving circumstances.

A car driven om a pool table needs shocks every 20 years, if then.
A car driving over curbs every day may break a shock on day #2.
The above advice is excellent.

Default Breathing life into this ancient thread...

Wow you guys are getting your *** busted on parts! I got both rears for $250 (Oem) and about to get the front OEM pair for $280!

Changed the rears myself in an hour....45 mins for 1st one, 15 mins on the other. You use a 17 mm combo wrench to loosen top nut while holding shock body with pipe wrench....it will snap after 4 spins...loosen bottom nut and pull it off! New one requires jacking up rear axle so top stem goes thru hole....you tighten it up...tighten bottom....plug harness back in....DONE!

You can do it! Quit getting f'ed at the stealership! Find a good indie...

You replace them if they fail and I have never had shocks fail on me on any car be it new or used and I keep my cars till they die or a bad driver totals it.
