instrument cluster start up noise
I had service dept say I need a new cluster (2000$ + labor). At start up(push button) I get a shuffling deck of cards sound for may be 1 second. Is it going to get worse, cause damage, could current cluster be repaired?I passed on 100k service plan for 1500$ and now its 3500$ since it is over 50k miles. To my knowledge now the service writer has to be within Florida. Before 50k miles a policy could be written in any state and serviced here. Are there any Toyota or Lexus dealers that offer better rates here in Florida. From past experience other noises will pop up when messing with the dash,so I could live with the sound if it is not going to mess anything up,decisions, decisions.I have a base '06 is350 w/51k miles. Thanks Michael
My old 06' IS350 did the same thing over 50k miles. I did have the extended warranty but the dealer wouldn't fix it as they said it was normal. It only happened during start up. I wouldn't worry about it. If the cluster breaks entirely then buy one on ebay or at a junkyard. Not worth $2000.
This exact same thing happened to my 06 350 at about 40,000 miles.
Being that it was still under warranty, I brought the car to the dealership and they said it was a problem with the "gears" on the speedo or tach needle (I believe).
They replaced my entire gauge cluster under warranty. I'll look for the invoice but I believe it was around $1,500-$2,000 to do.
One cool thing was that the recorded my mileage when I brought the car in the first time. I then scheduled a day for the repair a week later... so they ordered the new cluster with the number of miles on the car during my first visit. I didn't drive much, but the week's worth of miles came right off the car. I only got about 300 free miles, but it just seemed cool to me as this rarely happens (legally), lol.
Anyway, good luck with it.

I believe this is happening to me too. I have a 2007 IS350 with 60k miles. I thought the noise might be the cam gear engine grinding noise, but it seemed to be coming more from the area of the gauges/steering column than the engine bay.
To those who had this issue and got it fixed - did the dealer say there was any threat of damage from this issue or is it a nuisance? And did you have to replicate the sound for the dealer? This noise happens often but not all the time when you start the car, so I'm worried it might not happen when the dealer gets it.

My IS also makes the noise when door is closed(starting engine w/door open),if it did not make the noise touching the start button. It seems like a safety belt tensioner issue, although I do not have that option. The tech would not offer any prognosis for noise issue, like he had never seen it before.Between this and a blotched cam actuator replacement(that I did not ask for) is a indicator of Lexus quality, the car is going to a new home.
