2011 Headlights (merged threads)
really 24XX.XX dollars for them? damn. i know that the 2006-2010 headlights w/ HIDs and AFS where 1k a pop. non-hid/afs ones where 400 each. but i'd imagine these would be a little cheaper now that they DONT have AFS, i don't see much expense in putting an LED strip. unless you guys put a nice % bump on it because of these guy's guesses on prices :P
I would expect something close to the LED DRL from Porsche or Audi. They look "mean" and magnificent. These Lexus are just weak and underpowered. I would rather keep my stock yellow DRL than upgrading to the 2011. Look at these pics! The LED DRL looks ridiculously unnoticeable!
I've seen the LS LED strips and and it looks like IS will the similar. They are nothing like the Audi's, which look sick (love the one on the A5).
Anyways, I think for the cost, its too much, i think I'm going to spend the money on a good retro job for my 2009 IS. The LED is cool, but not worth dishing out that kind of money and still having a crappier projector than a retro.

This thread has just got me thinking. Even if these headlights fit directly onto the older models, when they come out they are going to cost a fortune.
So i'm thinking there must be a way to get the look of that new LED strip light onto our existing lights.
I have a friend who works in a acrylic fabrication factory and he says he can lazer-cut any shape. So i showed him the following:

An he claims he can cut that and even get it curved if nessasary and keep the edges curved so that it blends onto the headlight unit instead of having a flat cut which will look rubbish.
The next challenge would be to get light reflected somehow into that acrylic.
I have recently built a FTIR multitouch table based on IR leds being reflected inside acrylic. Acrylic is actually a very good light reflector. So one option might be to beam light from the sides of the acrylic and stick the acrylic ontop the headlamp giving that same kind of look.
Obviously this is all just theory but I am currently looking into it and any suggestions would be great.
I've got a huge sheet of acrylic left from my FTIR multitouch project and I am going to do some experiments with it.
Or the other option is that if there is enough room inside the housing, then possibly install it directly inside.
Any suggestions would be great.

I personally like the 2011 IS headlights and have always been a fan of the LED DRLs regardless of whether or not they are reminiscent of Audi. I'm patiently waiting to see if they can be made to work with 06-07 IS models. I sure hope so!!!
I actually like Lexus's implementation of LED DRL's better than what Audi does. Something about the curves of the LEDs on the Audis looks weird to me. I also like them on MB's with the LEDs in the fog area on the new E class.
This will require some rewiring. They use the same connector, but the wire assignments are different according to the EWD on TIS. Because they removed the swivel motor, they had a few unused wires to work with, so they took a couple of them and used them for the LEDs. The problem is, if you plug this thing in, you're going to immediately **** off the AFS ECU. You might even let the smoke out of it, and this is universally bad - smoke is the most important component of anything electrical - once you let it out, it's never the same again and is often very expensive to repair or replace.
So, this won't be exactly simple.

^^ We will just use the "MacGyver" wiring technique..
Snip here, snip there.. some spit & some scotch tape!!!
Good to GO!!
