if its on auto what determines what mode the car will use?

I'm not to sure if it has to do anything with the air quality outside, but when ever I have the temp at 60 for a while then switch it to 70, the circulation opens to outside. To my understanding, the auto just opened up to move the interior temp to 70 quickly. I might be totally wrong, so someone correct me if needed to. Then again, I do live in Hawaii so all we get outside of our cars is warm weather all around.

It is determined by settings and sensors in the system.

I agree. If the smog sensor detects fumes, or if the actual cabin temperature is more than a couple degrees warmer than the temperature setting, the system will select recirculate mode. Otherwise, it will select ventilate.

It will also switch from recirc to outside air if you pass gas. Go try it and report back.

Hahaha!!!! Are u serious?! I never tried this or ever noticed this when I pass gas. Curiosity is starting to sink in.

yes there is even a setting to how sensitive the sensor will detect smog...

It'll adjust depending on your temp setting. Say if you set the temp at 65 and its 70 inside it'll adjust it until it is 65.
