The non-ML stereo has a CD changer, not a DVD changer. You could replace the head unit with the ML one, or put an aftermarket DVD changer in the trunk and integrate it with a NavTV adapter, but both are expensive options. No easy, low cost hack.
DVD is a cool feature!! But... I'd like to hear from people who do have ML who are still using it regularly 3 - 6 months after taking delivery of the vehicle. DVD in rear seat headrests for the kiddos - for sure. DVD in the head unit. Great idea... I'm a tech nerd like that. But, not sure how much actual use people are getting out of it.
If ML is readily available - GO FOR IT. But, I would not lose out on a good deal on this car if it didn't have it.
To answer your question - there is no "hack" for this. There are aftermarket products that will allow you to add DVD functionality. But, as stated above, they are expensive.

I have a non ML because I wasn't aware of it. I got the AVelectronic Navigation Video Interface. It was a bit pricy. Now, I have a xbox in my car w/ a 300 gb HD w/ all my movies on it so its pretty cool. The AVelectronic unit can cost you either $500 or $650 depending on what model you want. Its pretty simple to install. Thats one way to go about it... If you don't want to go through that trouble, get the ML.
