Here is a pic of the driver side vent. I wedged some foam between the steel bar and plastic duct which puts upward force on the part to prevent movement which eliminates the rattle.

Thanks, I hope it helps some frustrated owners because I can tell you that I was pretty frustrated trying to diagnose these noises.

Just pull them straight out. It'll seem weird, but it's held in by clips from behind that are designed to give when you pull hard enough. Be careful, but pull firmly.

Great work! Now if only the dealer would do this for us without question.

I have a slight annoying rattle around my instrument cluster. By pressing on the dash right around the cluster (and on the vent) it seems to go away. Anyone with any ideas on this, and can it be related to the vent itself???? There is also the black plastic piece surrounding the clear plastic covering the cluster. Perhaps where this touches the actual dash, could this be the source??? Looking for any thoughts, tsb's or solutions for DIY. I am afraid dealer will make worse or cause new issues.

I still haven't reached 10k so I haven't gone to fix the rattle noises in the center or whatever, but it sucks that so many people have it. I don't get why a Lexus owner would have to take apart his car to find out these problems though... Well now I have a noise in the driver's side mirror.... But just sometimes.

Caymandive, I don't know exactly what kind it is, but I'm pretty sure it can be found at any hobby/craft store. Any dense foam like material should work. If I did not have this, I would have probably gone to Target and used a $1 cotton rag.

To pull out the vents, you will first want to push up on the four tabs (2 on each side) that are shown in the graphic. Push up on them until you hear it click. Then the easiest way to remove the vent assembly is to carefully pry back on the sides and then when the sides are exposed pull (by hand) while shifting the entire vent assembly left and right to work it out. While pulling it out, if you feel resistance (and you will) take a flash light to see what is getting caught. There are some clips on the bottom and top that can snag on the edge of the opening.

I also really want to stress to everyone that please do be careful doing any disassembly. Think ahead about if the attempt is worth it especially when the car is still under warranty and if something were to break. I don't know how much this part would be to replace, but something tells me it would equal to more than a value meal. One thing to consider is giving the dealer the chance to fix it first. You can even use the info in this thread to help them diagnose the noise(s) you are hearing.

To unlock the vents, you need to push/pull DOWN on the clips, not up...
