I own a 2006 Highlander Hybrid and need to replace the brake actuator. I am weary about replacing with a used one because the originals were failing prematurely. I also would rather not put a brand new one into a 15 year old vehicle with 235,000 miles on it. I am assuming the new actuators have a design change that fixes whatever issue the originals had that made them fail prematurely. Is there anyway to tell if the used ones incorporate the new design or do I have to buy a new one to be sure??
The updated unit is 44050-48191 if you see 44050-48190 I would assume that is not the updated part. There may have been a running change, but 44050-48191 will definitely be the revised actuator. My memory if fuzzy, think there was a warranty extension where Toyota would replace defective units but there was never a recall.
Every single used part is going to be 44050-48190 because the only way you'll see the revised part as used is if the donor car had the repair done, which wasn't very many.
td;dr don't think there is any way to know if 44050-48190 is an updated version if that happened at all.

04003-45148 is OK since it was installed as a warranty replacement (# from tsb)
44050-48191 is OK since it was installed as a non-warranty replacement (when the warranty has expired)

Why are two different part numbers still available?
Both Parts available here https://parts.elmhursttoyota.com/ Seems to be run by a 3rd party site called revolutionparts as several dealers in different sates have similar site. About to pull the trigger for one of them and see if i can do local pickup. Time of writing both part cost $1,177.33.
