Default 2008 LS600hl Gas Cap

Any insights on why the gas cap in my 2008 600hl different from the one click gas cap in the 460? The tech who certified the car put a comment in the report without mentioning details on why it was noted. First picture 600, second is 460.

I have no idea why they are different. Your post prompted me to go and check my 09 LS600 gas cap, and it's the same as yours from the first image.

Mine is definitely not the "tighten until 1 click" one!

Well, the cap on your 2nd post is the standard Toyota 1 click cap. The one on your 600 may be a newer design or may be aftermarket. All 5 of my "Toyotas" have the same cap.

I corrected my earlier comment..not one click for my 600. Also on my 600, the door will not open immediately sometimes. The system has to say "Refuel Ready" on the screen before it will open. Sometimes it's immediate after hitting the release button, sometimes it takes 3 to 5 seconds.

My fuel door had always opened pretty much immediately, or within a second or two. Tonight though it took a solid 10 seconds to open though, which I had read in the manual can happen.

I also notice in the top pic that there are two silver\black sensors on the right hand side, but only one on the 460 image.

Yup. .I think one sensor is for the door release and the other is like a backup and releases when the system is ready for refuel..guessing

I just replaced the original gas cap on my 2007 Lexus LS460, perhaps what I discovered may help. The original OEM part number was 77300-52040. It is a MULTI-CLICK cap, though the verbiage on the cap (or in the Owner's Manual) states nothing with regard to the number of clicks required. I would usually turn it until I felt/heard at least 3 clicks. The end of the tether that attaches to the fuel door has a hole in it so that it can be mounted around a post on the fuel door and is held down with a hex nut that also holds down the plastic fuel door latch.

That part is apparently no longer in production; in fact I could not even find a photograph of it anywhere on the Web. It has been superseded by part number 77300-06040. It is a SINGLE-CLICK cap and the verbiage on the cap states so: "TIGHTEN UNTIL 1 CLICK." After the single-click, the gas cap will not advance any further. (The cap also states 'no E15-E85, up to E10 gasoline only'.) The end of the tether that attaches to the fuel door has a small post on it that is designed to be 'poked into' a hole on the fuel door frame that will hold the post in place, a design as seen on most modern vehicles.

So, while the 77300-06040 cap itself is compatible with the fuel inlet of the 2007 Lexus LS460, its tether is not. So I snipped the entire tether off of the cap.

Notice that my gas cap does not match EITHER of the pictures the OP posted. And the cap I just installed, it too does NOT match either of the OP's pictures; it is a close match to the second picture, but not exactly.

So my guess about all this, from what all of you have said (and what some others have said in another thread about their oddly differing gas caps) and relying upon my experience of several years working at a factory that built heavy-duty trucks, is that this was what is sometimes called a "in-production" change. That the change, not being terribly significant, did not start with a specific model, year or VIN, but rather was at the discretion of the workstations, so as to 'burn off' the old inventory toward completing the conversion/change. Back up the line where they were installing fuel doors (before body paint), they were installing the old fuel doors with the hex nut whenever they could ... to burn up the old fuel door inventory. If a vehicle came down the line with a fuel door with a hex nut, then they used any gas cap in stock at the workstation that worked with the hex nut. If a vehicle came down the line with a fuel door withOUT a hex nut, then they used any gas cap in stock at the workstation that worked withOUT the hex nut. If a vehicle came down the line and could accept more than one type of gas cap in stock at the workstation, the workers would install an older gas cap. Those sorts of things. Until ... eventually ... they burned through all the old inventory -- the old fuel doors and old gas caps -- and production was then completely running on the most current specification.

I know this is an old thread. I have an 08 600 and just got new gas cap from dealer which also came with new sticker for the door. Almost 20 years old so replaced that and the radiator cap.
