Default RDS Radio Text

Is anybody familiar with how the RDS "Text" button works on the 400h? The button does not seem to work the way it is described in the manual. For example, I can not get it to display the complete name of the song if it is longer than the screen. Also, repeatedly pressing the button seems to generate random screens (they don't seem to follow any logical sequence).

Also, on the nav display screen, does anybody know of a bypass to keep the song title/band info from blanking out when the car is motion?

Thanks,

Brian

I don't like the way it works either in my 400h. On my M5 it works as it should, you activate RDS and it continously displays info, station, song, title even if I change radio stations. Once its activated, its ACTIVATED.

On the RX400H its like temporary, or, one off and then only displays for an instance.

Cheers,

I agree the problem is it only displays a few words, but if you NAV you can read the entire message, butyou have to pull over to the side of the road if you want to see it because Lexus is worried about our saftey so the song blanks out when the car is moning.

By the way I call Lexus yesterday and told them I love the car but I will never buy another Lexus unless they change the screen lock out feature.

Ironically, pulling over on the highway is probably just as problematic to see the song title than simply letting us read it. I mean, if I'm doing 70mph, where do you expect me to pull out? By the time I exit and find a carpark, the song's probably ended and not to mention the inconvenience of looking for a safe spot to stop.

After you push the text button once, if you see a small arrow in the right bottom corner of the screen, then you need to push and "hold" the text button again for a couple seconds until you hear a beep. Then you can see the additional text if it exists.

Thanks I didn't know that, but don't you think it would be safer to allow the info to be displayed on the NAV screen than it is to have us push and hold a button? When the car is stopped I can read everything on the NAV screen without holding buttons. But instead of allowing us to view the info on a screen at eye level we are forced to hold a button down and glance down lower instead of looking up to a screen that is almost at windshield level.

I've seen the small arrow and I've held the button in, but no beep and no continuation of the text message.

And I agree with Silvervette, pushing and holding a button is a rather clumsy approach when you could just glance over at the screen.

I guess, all things considered, this is just a minor nuisance with an otherwise outstanding vehicle. But when a car is so well built, one tends to find fault in the details!

I did get it to work but it wasn't easy. Try doing it while you are parked. If you have NAV push the audio button on the NAV screen and look for a station that has the ability to display the song (the audio NAV screen only stays on for a few seconds before you have to push the audio button again). When you have all the info on the NAV screen try pushing and holding the radio text button until you are able to get the radio to display the same info as the NAV screen. It is hard but it can be done, the problem is that fooling around with the button can get you killed. It would be much safer to just display the stuff on the NAV screen.

Sorry, that's how mine works and that's what it says in my 07 manual. I have the NAV and the non-ML stereo. My build is 01/07...

If the Radio Station is not sending RDS, then there is nothing to pick up. Are you getting some or none at all?

Definitely not an ideal implementation of RDS.. My G35 also was terrible at this.

Hi all - I'm new here, and this RDS thing is one thing I can't get to work at all. I keep pushing the button, but it never says anything in the readout except which pre-set button I have chosen. I know a lot of the radio stations send the info, because my ex's truck displays the stuff all the time. I looked in my user manual and it made it sound like RDS is always on, but I'm not too sure. Any ideas?

If the radio stations do not send the "msg," then you will not get any. Search for a station that sends the signals.

Dusting off this old post. I just traded in an '03 GX 470 for an '07. The text scrolled constantly on the '03, but not on the '07. I hate when they do things for our safety that are just nuisances. Now if they can just do something about people who text and drive...
