After sitting in my cold garage for 1 1/2 weeks, my 2020 RX 450hL wouldn't start yesterday. The lights and electronics were flashing on and off, but it wouldn't start. I suspected the battery was too low so I jumped it and it came back to life. So I suspect I need to replace this 4.5 year old battery.

I wanted to test the battery with my Topdon BT100 tester. It makes me enter the battery type and I have no idea what type of battery this is. The choices are Regular Flooded, AGM Flat Plate, AGM Spiral, GEL or EFB.

The markings on the battery are:
Panasonic D23 (JIS)
20HR 51Ah
CCA 355A
S55D23L

Can anyone tell me what type of battery this is so I can test it?

if i had to guess, agm flat ... wouldn't be spiral, since its not like an optima in shape..
i don't think it would be a gel, or flooded

i would test agm flat and test again as flooded and see what it says.. i would suspect the results may be more similar than different..

let us know what you find...
minnesota here, and i keep lots of things on chargers since i don't drive much... my rx and another car may sit a month or more at a time without moving... one moves more often, but sits outside... (plus motorcycles and a jetski.. ) battery tender + and ctek 4.3 chargers are used..

 

My Lexus RX350 is only two years old. If I leave it for two weeks without using it, the battery is dead. This happened several times - very frustrating. Any idea why this battery keeps failing? My car is always parked in my garage. Thanks, Terry

 

I tried to have AAA jump my car and they said "Not Possible" did you do something different to be able to use Jumper cables

 

The owner's manual tells you how to jump it. Even though the battery is in the back, the terminals to jump are in the hood. The positive is in the fuse box. I have one of those battery packs that are for jump starting since I have another car that sits outside and isn't driven frequently so I used that.

1) 95% sure it would be flat plate, which I think it the most common type of AGM batteries. The spiral type will look like there are cylinders in the battery - think Optima batteries.
2) Yes you'll want to register the battery. Please note that registering and coding the battery type or two different things.

Registering the battery lets the car's computer know that there is a new battery in the car, and the car will alter how it charges the battery as a result. From what I can tell the car targets a charge state of around 80% capacity, and will over charge the battery if there's a new battery in there and it's not registered. That will cause the battery to wear out quickly. I think some reported within a year, but that's probably worse case. If you don't register it, it's not going to fail tomorrow, but it will hurt the life of the battery.

There are a couple of ways to register the battery; dealer, independent shop that specializes in bmws, a scan tool with the capability (such as foxwell NT530), or there are some apps out there that you can use too. Dealer might be $150, indy might be $75, the foxwell is about $150, but there are a lot of other uses from it, and the bimmerlink ap is $30, but you'll need an OBD adaptor, so figure another $50 or so for that.

Final thing, as if there wasn't enough already, if you get a different type of battery, you'll need to tell the car that as well, and that's different than registering a new battery. It would be coding the battery type. If you stick with the same, then you don't need to to do that. The different types are AGM vs. not, and then Ah size, going in brackets from 105, 90, 80 or something like that. Save yourself the trouble and just go with the same size as what you have in there. The Ah will be on the top of the battery, so it's easy to tell. Also, I'd check BMW for the battery itself, even if you don't have them register it. It was the cheapest option for the matching 105Ah battery when I replaced mine.

I purchased my brand new 2024 RX 350 Prem. Plus this past September (2024). The car currently has 679 miles. I had not driven the car for 4 days. I went out to start it over the weekend and the battery was dead. Lexus sent out AAA Club to jump start it. I have an appointment tomorrow (01/07/25) with the Lexus dealership where I purchased it to address the issue. I find this issue rather odd.

 

So this sounds silly but...how do I get access to the 12v battery in the back of my 450hL? Just got a 2019 450hL last week and I want to take off the plastic cover without completely messing up any clips. Is there a specific spot (or spots) I need to pry? The crazy thing is--there doesn't seem to be anything on the internet that shows how to get access to a 450hL 12v battery (though there's a lot on the regular 450h)

 

For anyone reading this in the future; an Interstate H5 47 AGM will NOT fit the 450hL. Battery needed jumping away from home and went to Costco to buy one. The Interstate is too long to fit in the rear. You might be able to get it in there if you remove the bottom battery tray but I’m going to return it for a Lexus unit. Also, the vent tube from the stock Panasonic battery doesn’t fit the vent hole for the Interstate.

 

obviously a little late, but…

press _down_ on the center of each of the three clips. It will click and then you can pull the clip straight out, no prying necessary.

To reinsert, press up on the end of the clip so the center pops up past its original position. Then drop the clip in the hole and press down until the center clicks down one click into its original location (if you press too hard it clicks twice and the clip can pull out)
