I just picked up a 2016 and my Samsung phone doesn't register with the USB (blue tooth works fine) am I correct and horrified that Android Auto doesn't work, only Apple play?

No, you're wrong. Neither AA nor CarPlay are on the head units.

USB connection in most cars ONLY works with Apple products...but this is NOT Apple CarPlay. Apple CarPlay is a whole different animal. Apple CarPlay is when the iPhone screen is displayed on the car’s navigation screen and you can interact with it directly...navigation, music, and whatnot can all be done on the navigation screen.
USB connection in Lexus GX allows you to see your music playlist (on iOS devices) and select songs from there...but that is the extent of it.
Android devices are usually not supported via USB in most (any?) car. You have to rely on BT. And this is why Android devices suck. 3rd party support is minimal.
Yeah the GX lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Best you get is bluetooth or USB support. I've always used BT with my Android phone, so I dunno whether USB support works or not for the GX. I do know that BT allows you to see your music and contacts/call history...etc.
But yeah, I don't imagine the GX is gonna have either AA or Carplay until ~2025. Whenever an all-new model comes out.
I just heard back from GROM and they said they'll have a Demo unit for the 460 in a couple of weeks. I'm curious to see how it performs compared to the ali linked one.

Anyone in/near Belmont California could sign up for their beta program.
I read through the long thread on the IS forum and there seem to be quite a bit of bugs and issues even with Android 8.1 update.
Hope it's not the same with the GX but I'm going to skip it for now. I've been thinking for reasons to get in the groupbuy but I don't see myself using much of these features. Waze/Google Map are fine on the phone and I only stream music via BT and mostly listen to Sports Radio.

Im debating on waiting to purchase till the 2021 GX comes out to see if they update its infotainment system to add CarPlay. Im thinking it won't happen in 2021 because I am hearing they are doing a total update on the LX which is totally out of my league. Anyone hearing of changes to the GX for 2021?
ok I'll bite...
if you're waiting for Lexus to put Apple CarPlay in the GX, well it may never happen.
The GX is a dying model in the Lexus lineup, much like the GS...
I don't own an Apple so am not sure why Carplay is so desirable.... what does it do that's special?
I think there are plug n play kits which can mirror your smartphone to the GX infotainment system if this is what you're after
