I'm getting ready to go on a minor overlanding trip in few month and looking for a high-end cooler that would last me good 4 days without replenishing. Could you recommend me a good brand and size that could accommodate 3 people and fit perfectly in the trunk of a GX straight in?
I've heard Yeti's aren't true to their size (internally) as marketed. Looking at Otterbox Venture 45 or Yeti 65 (There is a deal on Costco for fairly good price for both at the moment). Yeti seems like a good size for the trunk of the GX but it is not as deep as the Otterbox.
jkonquer, I don't know about the Otterbox Venture, but I have a Yeti Tundra 45 and it works great even down here in the texas heat! I have been please with every Yeti product that I've purchased.
The Yeti Tundra 65 fits perfectly, lengthwise, behind the second row of my GX. Been camping in warm weather and the inside stays cold for, at least, 3 days without replenishing. 4 may be a stretch, but likely doable with something like Arctic Ice.
Thanks, I'm looking to maximize length of the cooler vs the cargo space front to back. Was 45 or 65 enough space for 3-4 people for the weekend?
I only have a 65, but I think that would be adequate for 3-4 people for the weekend. Depends on how hungry/thirsty y'all are. We use ours for our family of 4 for 3-4 day camping trips. It's a tight fit, but we manage to get everything needing cold in there. Depending on the heat, I'm often looking for more ice by the end of day 3. If you can pre-cool the cooler and everything going in it, that will help a lot.
While I don't have the Yeti I have the Titan welded RF soft cooler Costco also sells. I took it camping over Labor Day weekend and it kept ice for several days. I filled it up with ice on Friday afternoon and left it in the car until Monday and there was still some chunk of ice left. I'm very impressed with it. If you're looking to save space, maybe 2 of these would do. They are much lighter to carry compare to the Yeti 65 which is like 40lbs empty.
These units can go down to freezer levels but can also be just refrig units as well if you turn the temp up. Food stays drier and space normally occupied by ice is available for food. One can easily run it off a 100W solar panel too with battery and solar charge controller.
A Yeti45 is good for 2 people. Anymore and it may stretch you thin based on the amount of ice needed to keep additional things cold. With the 45 packed, it needs/holds 7-10 pounds of ice and for about 3 days.
Like others have said, a Yeti65 will fit fine behind the second row and be adequate for what you need.
Addtiinally, I am in the market for a fridge. In order to run a fridge (50qt ARB)($850?). I will need to run a 10 gauge wire from the battery ($50). That battery will most likely be upgraded to a 31 series deep cell.($350). Then we added a capacitor, essentially, and look at something like a Goal Zero Yeti 400 ($350) or make a storage cell out of an AGM and pelican box... and then a 100W solar panel to charge the battery through a quick disconnect. Whew. All that to keep things cold......hmmmmmmmm really makes you think.
I already had this 400W unit so run mine off it. One can build for cheaper of course. I have a Goal Zero Yeti 400W but the older lead acid version which is "heavy"... so I usually take the Suaoki.
I’ve had them all and none compare to a Yeti, they just don’t. If you properly prep the cooler two days before, you’ll have ice for days. We primarily use our 105 Yeti for anything more than two days and our 65 for a weekend.
I gonna need to see these coolers in person...Anyone know any local sporting good retailers have these in stock? I'm in socal.
My dilemma is that Otterbox Venture 45 (actual 45 qt) with bundle (divider, cutting board, side tray, dry basket and bottle opener) is on sale at Costco for $240 https://www.costco.com/OtterBox-Vent...100416845.html.
It seems that Otterbox 45 has better features with thicker wall and the bigger Yeti 65 is actually smaller externally meaning it has much thinner walls. So is that extra 10 qt capacity worth the extra $60 and features? I know I'm nitpicking here, but I just want to spend my hard earn money on a superior product.
