Default Programming a spare key for the GX (No Techstream Needed)

Finally figured out how to program a spare key for the GX without Techstream, after the dealer quoted me $550 + tax. Absolutely insane. All-in cost for me was $240. $80 for the key and $150 for a tool I'll absolutely use in the future.

An overall straightforward experience, but had a lot of questions/guesswork along the way. This walkthrough will make things crystal clear for folks wanting to do this themselves.

What you'll need (all purchased with my own money)
1. A key already programmed to the car
2. Launch Creader Elite V3 T (Amazon Link) -- currently listed at $210, picked mine up on sale for $150. Think of it as a handheld Techstream replacement. No second laptop, no shady resellers, no incompatible cables. Loaded with functionality for any DIYer. At $150 it was a no-brainer.
3. OEM GX Key Fob (eBay Link) -- $75. A few notes on buying secondhand.
-FCC ID must be HYQ14FBF
-The key must be listed as "ready to program," "unlocked," or "virginized" -- meaning it has been unlinked from its previous vehicle and is ready to pair to yours.
-Confirm compatibility with your specific GX model year. Other Lexus models may share the same FCC ID but not be compatible. The first key I bought was from an ES and failed to link.
-One seller to avoid: 1010keys. Keys are not OEM (not necessarily a dealbreaker), but I a frustrating experience with the seller. Won't get into the details here, but returned for a full refund. Can't recommend them.
Once you have both keys and the Launch Creader, you're ready to go. The programming process takes about 15 minutes.

Programming Steps:
  1. Turn the car to "Ignition On" mode (press the ignition button twice without your foot on the brake). Do not start the engine.

  2. Plug the Creader into your OBD-II port and power it on. From the home screen, tap "Local Diagnose."

  3. Tap "AutoDetect." The tool will scan and identify your vehicle automatically.

  4. Select "Automatic Search (North America)" -- adjust if you're outside North America.

  5. Confirm your vehicle details on the Vehicle Information screen and tap "OK." You should see GX460, 2020, 1UR-FE.

  6. Let the Health Report run to completion. This scans all systems and takes a few minutes.

  7. When the Basic Diagnosis Report screen appears, tap the back arrow (top left) to return to the Diagnostic Trouble Code screen.

  8. Scroll down and tap "Smart Access (SA)."

  9. Tap "Special Function."

  10. Select "Smart Code Registration (Classic)" or "Smart Code Registration" -- I used the Classic option.

  11. Select "I am just registering keys."

From here, follow the on-screen prompts. Before starting, make sure all other keys and phones are out of the car to reduce interference. When prompted, tap your already-programmed key to the ignition button -- you'll hear one beep. Then tap the new key to the ignition button -- two beeps. That's it, you're done.

Total out of pocket: $240, including a tool you'll reach for again for future diagnostics and wrenching.

When programming keys for a late Lexus model in techstream, you have to input codes that are a pain to get (and which cannot be hacked or generated as far as I know--you have to get them from a licensed tech or a real toyota approved locksmith).

Does this bypass those codes?

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Does it also have available the suite of commands one can access in Techstream? Or if not, does it have a subset of them?

Seemed pretty comprehensive from what I could see.

Worth it for me from a convenience perspective. Techstream has always hit or miss in my experience.

Great! I programmed my keys using the kingbolen k7 not only for my gx but for a friends's RX and a 2024 CR-V and a Toyota Fortuner 2019 as well. Super easy process just had to buy a virgin keyfob off ebay.

this is the device if anyone needs it https://amzn.to/4eLEvA9

Thank you I will definitely have to check into that. Would that same device work on a Toyota Tundra by chance? How about 5 months ago I got all the sparlexus keys and remotes I'll need for a while.

Yup. Should work no problem. Check the amazon description to be sure.

Any Chance this also works on the 2022 GX460? I believe they have different Keys.

Actually, the key looks identical to my key! I would love to try this.

Don’t see why it wouldn’t. Just make sure you get the right key for your 22
