Default Nozzle Cuts Off when Pumping Gas

2005 GX470

My Issue is that when I pump Gas ONLY in Calif it keeps stopping. I have tried all angles of the pump. I have tried holding back rubber on pump, but that will not help. This is something else. I have been to other states such as TX AZ NM & NV and this problem does not exist.

Has anyone had the same or similar problem that had to get it serviced? What was the outcome? Any true knowledgeable Mechanics on here that actually know why this is happening?

Only in California It's designed to be pressure sensitive to backflow and then it is suppoed to cut off, but to hear you say its only in Cali is weird Good luck

I pull the nozzle back out of the filler an inch or so, and find the problem is mostly resolved.

I usually just lift up a nozzle slightly (in the back), it works that way.

Like some of the others, I find that holding the gas pump nozzle out an inch or so from being completely inserted solves the problem.

Also, though, on the ES forum, someone who had a similar issue with his ES reported that the dealership service department eventually discovered that there was a cap from a fuel additive that had fallen into the neck of the tank, and that was causing the pumps' auto shut off mechanism to mistakenly think that the tank was full.

It happened to my GX too but only at the one gas station that on the way to go to work., it"s weird and works fine to the other stations. I do not know the problems b/t my truck and the gas pump.

I have also experienced this same problem at more than one gas station.
It does not happen all the time, but it happens often enough to make me wonder what is wrong with my GX gas tank filler tube. Maybe it is not breathing properly? Some breather hose being clogged?

And, yes, i live in California too. Never tried pumping gas in the GX in another state.

Moving the Nozzle back an inch just didn't work. I went to a service place and they took it apart and cleaned the Filter. I actually tested it and it seems to work Ok but not on Full Blast.. but faster then it has in a long time.

You mean cleaned fuel filter? That's strange, since fuel has absolutely nothing to do with pumping gas. As others have mentioned, the issue with gas nozzles in CA...

^ I think the OP meant filler, not filter. Like you said a fuel filter has no bearing on how the gas comes out of the pump.

Or maybe the OP means the gas station changed their filters....
