Question Fuel tank issue or gas pump problem?

For the past 3 fill-ups at 3 different gas stations, I simply could not hold the gas pump lever to fill up the gas tank on my 2GS4 automatically. When I tried to do that, it would click off after 2 seconds. The first time it happened, I thought it was just a pump issue but same thing happened second and third time at different gas stations. The only way I could "fill-up" was to manually hold the lever down every 2 seconds after it clicks. The car is a 2000 GS4 with only 47k miles and has had absolutely no such problem before. My own wild guess is some type of sensor in the fuel filler neck area is malfunctioning causing the lever to trip. Has anyone ever experienced same on the GS? What are your thoughts and advice? Thanks.

I too have a similar problem when trying to fill-up on my second gen GS4 that the gas station pump lever refuses to "engage" in the notch to fill up automatically until full. My friend's GS3 also has the same problem. To fill up, we have to manually hold the lever down every few seconds. Our fuel gauge inside the car seems to be working fine and registering the correct amount of fuel inside the tank. Both of us have tried different gas stations but the problem still persists. Any idea what may be causing this issue?

Sounds like you have a problem with your on-board refueling vapor recovery (ORVR)system. There could be a restriction inside the fill neck or the sealing valve.

Thanks for your input. Is the ORVR you mentioned that I can easily trouble shoot myself without the need of special instruments or is this something that requires professional help? Please advise how it can be done. I also did a check on the inside of filler neck and did not find any debris at least the top part.

You would need a voltmeter, a vacuum gauge and maybe a pressure gauge depending what you find. You would need access to your charcoal canister as you would be disconnecting some wires/hoses from it. Might be a pro job depending upon your expertise Unless someone else could chime in with another way?
