Default Timing Chain Tensioner

Have anyone on here replaced the timing chain tensioner on their GS350? I have a 2013 F sport RWD, pin pointed it to what i think is the tensioner. Was wondering if anyone have replaced it without having to tear the whole motor down. Some of the pictures I've seen of the 2GR-FSE motor, there might be a cover that you can get to the tensioner...can anyone confirm this is doable?

Before I get too deep into it, I'll have to recheck all the pulleys and possibly the alternator as well. Seen some videos where that also caused a whining noise when accelerating. I would prefer it to be a crappy alternator or any of the pulleys then having to deal with the tensioner. Ugh!

Sounds like you would be opening a large can of worms. This was something not necessarily designed to be touched since it's a timing chain. Sure you just don't need a new belt?

Are you talking about the serpentine belt? I'll have to double check that as well. Planning on removing the belt today and re. the engine to see if the whine is still there. My god, that would be amazing if it's just the serpentine belt.

I've seen some 3.5L V6, (actually there's a video on here for a V6 of an Infinity) it had a cover to get to the tensioner. Was hoping to see if the 2GR-FSE motor had something similar.

Yes the serpentine belt. It has a tensioner but if the belt is really worn out it will start to makes noises. My car has almost 100k mile, original belt, no issues.

Welp it's not the tensioner. That being said, it's really easy to get to and remove. Putting it back is a little tricky but nothing to crazy.

looks like the tensioner has a fail safe, the teeth will prevent the pushrod from pushing back.

Maan that sounds serious, sure you don't want to get a mechanic just to diagnose? Not questioning your ability (I do work on my car I'm not really cut out for hehe) but I know enough to know that's not something you want to frig around with based on internet videos.

Thanks for chiming in. I dont mind snooping around. After all it's just a bunch of parts that a bunch of really smart people designed. It's also kinda enjoyable learning about the car. Haha.

While the belt is off you should spin every part it drives to see if it is the source of the noise.

We’re you able to determine the cause of whine? I took off the serpentine belt on my 13 f sport and the noise was still there. No idea what it could be if not the alternator and not the tensioner.

It is normal for our cars to have that whine, every 4GS I have driven makes the same whine noise from the engine.
My tanabe medalion axle back exhaust added a sporty tone to the car and also covers the whine

Power steering pump? Haven't heard about issues with the power steering and our cars, but it's surprisingly quite common on Mercedes... got a few in my neighborhood I'm always hearing go past my house.

Our cars all have electric steering racks, no fluid, no pump

Forgot about that... hmmmm> No whining noise on my 18... maybe it's more common on higher mileage cars?

I have seen it on low mileage too. Perhaps the 2016 refresh had something to do with it. Whether it was an engine revision change or the new 8 speed transmission is a factor
