Default Timing belt vs chain

I just had the timing belt replaced on my gx470. I was told that there is a chain that will protect the motor if the belt goes bad. is this true? and should I have replaced it anyway according to the manual? thanks

If the belt goes bad then it's lights out for the engine. There is no chain that "protects" the engine. If you had the timing belt replaced then you are fine, so long as all the other timing components are in good working order. There are are two pulleys and a tensioner that if they go bad then they can make the belt fail. How many miles on your GX?

No, no chain. A rubber ribbed belt is the only thing that keeps the motor scattering itself all over the street.

...don't forget about the Johnson rod. It's a critical piece of something or other.

I'm pretty sure that's a secondary air injection pump code, maybe you left a connector unplugged. If it's got a failed pump, its huge money to fix unless you bypass it.

Huge money if you buy the Toyota part. You can buy the same Dorman motor for significantly less money -- you just have to transfer over the connector for the wires.

is the air injection plug something that is disconnected during the timing belt replacement task?

No - to get to it you have to remove the intake manifold, and that is not something typically done during a TB replacement.

Or you can buy the bypass and simulator and never have to worry about it again. Dorman isn't the greatest quality stuff.

thanks guys, my next question is: is the air injection pump one of the normal culprits for the p1442 code? when ordering this pump where is a good place to buy it? I have someone who will replace it if necessary, and lastly exactly what does it do and just how important is this item for the engine? my wifes Toyota has a evap leak code for years and it doesn't cause any problems. I replaced the fuel cap last week to see if that helps. as I think about it the code came on after a fill up. I really appreciate your help. cptjack1

by the way, where is the secondary injection pump? I also have 125k on my gx. the primary pump is the one under the intake right? It looks like a fuel filter housing for a piece of farm equipment. thanks again.
