Watching my friend's dog for a few days. My dog (left) usually rides in her car seat, and luckily I had one from when she was a puppy for the other dog. Only way I can keep them from ruining my Cabernet leather and from jumping everywhere in the car. I guess it also has some safety benefits for if an accident ever happens. People always smile and point when they see my dog sitting in the car next to them.
You really ought to get a dog restraint system to make it safer for poochie. My dog loves his and curls up on the back seat (on his doggie rug, while wearing his harness which hooks into any of the back seat female seat belt hardware.
I feel a whole lot better knowing that he is safer than if he were loose or in a basket and that a 45 pound fur ball will not be coming over the seat back on his way to the windshield if something bad happens.
My wife and I have two versions of a dog restraint, one in her GS and one in mine. They are different, mine hooks into a short pigtail connected to the seat belt and then the seat belt is connected. This device is then clipped to a D hook on the dogs harness. On my wife's, it is a different harness which has about an 18 inch lead made out of seat belt material which ends in a male seat belt buckle which hooks into any empty seat belt buckle. He seems to like them both equally well.
I would never let him ride in the front seat because I fear he may be heavy enough to activate the air bag and thus get launched through the back window or break his neck in even a minor fender bender. I had a very minor accident which inflated my airbag and had the equivalent of rug burns on my face, chest and arms which took days to go away.

No worries. Inside the "basket", it has a restraint system that attaches to the collar/harness to prevent them from jumping out of it and keep them from becoming a projectile during an accident. I ALWAYS strap them in.
