Default Key got stolen....is reprogramming possible?

Hi guys,

My gf had her purse stolen (key was in purse) and we now need to reprogram the other key. does anyone have any experience doing this? the dealer is saying they probably need to replace the whole keyless system which is $1500!

Why are you reprogramming the other key?

Dealer can turn off the stolen key, the thief will still have the metal key to get into the car manually if they really wanted. Changing all the locks wouldn't be cheap.

The dealer is only to reprogram keys in pairs so I have to buy another for them to program. I was able to clarify that new key plus reprogramming is $390.

^^^ that sounds more like it, when they program a new key they need to wipe the old ones out and reprogram all the keys for the car.

I don't see why they have to do them in pairs... I'm sure others have purchased eBay keys and had them coded to the car just fine.

go to a different dealer, you do not have to do them in pairs.

Sorry this happened. I'd feel very paranoid about the hard key floating around in a thief's hands. Do you know if your insurance (maybe homeowner's) will cover this? I know it sounds silly but some do for laptops and jewelry, etc if they were stolen outside the house.

As others have said, this dealership might be trying to squeeze a little extra out of you. People have purchased keys from ebay and had the dealership program them for a fee (single keys, not pairs).

You can also look into buying a new key off ebay or sewell to save a little from the local stealership cost

if you're in San Diego I can program it for you. Need to prove ownership of the car first though.

all you need to do is get another key and get that key programed (approx $250), and keep it moving dont worry about your car getting stolen, thats why you have auto insurance. It's crazy to pay $1,500 for whole new system. GL.
