Default RearView Mirror Question

Hello all.
My 06 GS430 stays in the garage 99% of the time and today I notice my rearview mirror looks awful. Its discolored and look like a 50yr old mirror. It looks like the coating has come off in places. Has this happen to anyone else?

I recall it's been discussed on the forum before, try searching for instant gratification.

No idea what causes it, probably extreme heat/cold cycles eventually break down the tinting membrane behind the glass.

You should complain about it - if these mirrors go bad with any kind of regularity there should be a safety recall if you can't see behind you. The rearview mirror is the last thing I would usually think to worry about breaking in a car.

They even redesigned the part since the 06 model year... one would think that with enough persistence you should be able to get Lexus to cough up a new one even out of warranty.

TSB 0186-09 Poor rearview image quality
It does not cover the 06GS460 though.

Got mine replaced on the 07 GS350 after I read about it here awhile back but I wonder if the dealer installed the redesigned version?

I had/have the same issue on my '06 IS350. Dealer would not replace it as I was out of the warranty period for the TSIB. I bought a used one on eBay for $125, just need to install it now.

were you able to find the redesigned part number? I hate to get one from ebay and have the same issue later.

I have the same problem, I just put a broadway mirror on top of it. $20 fix. The image is better too and would never break.

That's because it never "worked". I wouldn't be able to drive without a dimming mirror with all these people throwing hid kits on cars with reflectors
