Default Navigation DVD 8.1 Gen 5

I was looking into getting the updated Navigation DVD for my car since there has been a decent amount of building, etc. in my area. Is it really worth gett an updated DVD? Will it really be that different? Will that "I Agree" thing ao away? I know the version 07.1 is out for Gen 5 now. I heard the version 08.1 is coming out soon. Does anyone know when? I did a search and couldn't find much on this. Woul anyone recommend me waiting for the next version to come out? There are versions of the 7.1 for sale on eBay. I would assume 8.1 would show up on there eventually.

unless new map data is absolutely necessary, i would stick with your current one and have the ability to bypass the lock out

I rather have the I agree button, I am tired of staring at the screen for a while just to be able to enter the address, I want to press the button and skip it by my own action

yes, i also won't upgrade unless there are big map data improvement. fwiw, on all my previous cars (4th one now with nav), i have never updated the nav

the 7.1 doesn't have the i agree button, but like i have always said, i don't find it that much more attractive at all, coz' of the several seconds wait that kevin talked about

if you want to see the map or enter stuff right the way you start the car? you have to press on the MAP button, so the map shows up right the way, and then you press DEST, etc.... so you are pressing one button already anyway...

keep in mind that 'new' building/streets may take a year or two to show up on the map dvds anyway. depends on when the addresses become official and when the remapping for the upgrade was done. plus as pointed out, you loose ability to unlock while in motion once you cross over to 7 (unless you hack wires or install a kit).

that said, in the minority it appears, i upgrade every 2 or 3 releases.

i don't know exactly what you mean by downgradable but when i went from 5 to 7 and first had trouble with the plug n play kit (45 sec limit to unlock), i went back to v 5 from 7 several times. lost the secret menu, regained the secret menu etc as i was doing trial and error trying to figure out what was what. after i upgraded to 7, i ejected the v 7, pulled the battery cable for a while, reconnected and rebooted the nav with v5 and got the old maps and hidden menu back. for what it's worth.

You can always just use the new data from v8.1 but use the older firmware which allows the over ride.

I have been using a hybrid disc for 2 years with excellent success.
GEN 3 02 SC430,
GEN 4 06 SC430
& GEN 5 IS250

My two Cents

^ Same here, Hybrid disks are the way to go to get the hidden menu AND new map data, there are tons of threads detailing step by step procedure on this board. The one I followed is this one https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...&postcount=124

I was successful at making 5.1/6.1 hybrids following those instructions. (gen 4 system). i was not able to make a 5.1/7.1 hybrid work. the file structure on the 7.1 is different and just swapping in the old menu file from the older version doesnt work.

and yeah, since 7.1 i don't think people can make hybrid disk anymore
