Just went to go fill up my car with gas and while I was watching my checking account feed into the gas tank, I walked around the back of my GS. All of a sudden, I noticed a crack at the top of the white reverse lamp where it meets the red brake lamp. To make matters worse, it's that way all the way across all of the rear tail lights!
There's no signs of intentional or accidental damage, just the cracks. The only thing I could think is that, since I live in Vegas, maybe it's the heat? I know that's a stretch, but I'm at a total loss at how this could've happened.
Someone please tell me this is a warranty issue and I've just missed the posts about it?!
i suppose the heat may have done it. this may sound stupid but can acrylic crack like glass does when its really hot (like ambient temp in Vegas) and you put cold water on it? maybe you washed your car after it was outside baking in the sun for hours and hours???
ive never heard of that but i guess its possible? yes!.....far fetched, but possible?
That's a good point about the acrylic. Not sure, but I would guess it would affect the headlights too and they look fine. Either way, she's going in for normal service tomorrow and I'll ask then.
I'm not expecting good news, but I figure if I don't ask if it's a warranty issue, I'll never know.
by the way lvmike......check these bulbs out when you get a chance. many of us are using these bulbs instead of the orange "stockers" i see you have from your pic. not sure if your into modding your 3GS but???

I doubt it's from heat, as my car is outside 3 days a week and it's been over 110 almost every day for the past three weeks (Phoenix).
It may be the lens is stressed from incorrect installation, which would undoubtedly be a warranty issue. Good luck!
Looks like the smaller white piece expanded and cracked from being stopped by the red surround. Smaller pieces will expand more drastically in heat than larger ones since there is no room to dissipate the heat. Looks like a design defect to me.
Thanks to all of you for your input and advice. Here's the latest update. Took it to the (one and only) dealer. They advised they'd never seen anything like this and wrote it off as a non-warranty impact.
I asked to talk to the Svc Mgr, and he, along with a tech, advised they'd never seen or heard of anything like this but found it very mysterious as to why/what could have caused it. They took pics and will be submitting to Lexus corporate.
I'm hopeful that they will reconsider this as a warranty issue as the more I look at it, talk to and show others, the more I'm convinced it's 1) not the climate I'm in since others have posted that theirs are fine and the local dealer hasn't seen anything like this, 2) it's a factory defect of either the lamp housing or the install. We'll see. I'm crossing my fingers.

Those are sweet! I've had my GS for just over 2 months now and have been reading over the Vaistech/override/hack threads. I'm just too chicken to do it myself yet. I'm happy with the exterior look...well, until I saw those bulbs! Those are definitely going to replace the 'stockers'! Thanks for the link!
I haven't searched too hard, but haven't really found a Vegas shop that does import aftermarket stuff. I used to live in Hawaii where there was a pretty good selection of shops to get JDM stuff, import accessories, etc.
Of course, sometimes, I have to remind myself that I do have a mortgage, bills, and a really expensive golf habit.
