Look for a security light flashing. Might not be picking up the key fob. Otherwise, start with the basics. Battery life good, connections good, power to the starter. If no power to the starter, check fuses/swap relays. etc.

This would not cause a no crank.

Good call, you're right, cars still crank when they have a security issue. Slipped my mind.

Just an update. About 18 months ago my car would crank on its own. No key in ignition. Problem was ignition switch. This time it won't crank at all but if I jump the starter power cable to solenoid with key in run position it cranks and starts. My old starter relay was working but burnt. I don't know if that occurred 18 months ago when it would crank until batter dead randomly or this time. The car sat for a couple days and when I tried to start I initially thought dead battery. Starter stunk of burnt smell. I thought stater failed while I tried to crank this time. I replaced and still didn't crank. more to come....

So found blow 40amp main fuse in fuse box by battery, square fuse. Not relay but fuse. Put in another Toyota ignition switch, new relay (old one burnt) and fuse running like champ. Car must have been trying to start itself and burnt the relay and finally fuse blew. Internal short in circuit wouldnt have affected the relay as the contacts would have been open.

I'm having the same issue as this. Although, I didn't know about the automatic cranking until I was at my car down the block and my neighbor told me it was automatically cranking all night. He said he saw exhaust fumes coming out and was confused as to how it was running. I usually have this kind of electrical problem whenever it rains, so there might be something there. Alternator and battery are brand new. Will check starter tomorrow. My dad told me to hit it a little with a wrench

Update: Just got this fixed. I bought a used starter relay off ebay and popped it into where my "burnt" relay used to be. I also noticed the"MAIN 40A" fuse was blown, and got a generic one from O'Reilly's (I was scared it wasn't compatible at first because the fuse element looked vastly different). After all that, the engine still wouldn't start. I decided to just call a tow at that point. The mechanic did a diagnosis (I also heard them smacking the starter with a rod) and they said it was indeed the starter. Charge wasn't being delivered and apparently there was a bunch of motor oil on it. So about $700 out of pocket and it's running again
