SerialNine have done a few using Nissan CD009 transmissions and their own adaptors and shifter. Collins also makes kits for this conversion.

Hey GsBadman.

To kind of help you out there, you have a few options dependent on budget and power goals for manual swapping. The most popular swaps are W58 (Lexus IS300 5 Speed), R154 (MkIII Supra 5 Speed), V160 (MkIV Supra 6 Speed), CD009 or CD00A (350z 6 Speed), and T56 Tremec (Chevy 6 Speed). They all come with pros and cons based on reliability, the power they can hold, gear ratios, and the cost. Dependent on which transmission you select you may need to buy an adapter kit to get the bellhousing to mount up to the 2JZ (some companies are Collins, SerialNine, Grannas Racing), a new clutch if it isn't included, new transmission mounts, a small "massage" of the transmission tunnel depending on the transmission you choose, shifter relocaiton kit (to have it exit the transmission tunnel in the stock location), potentially an AT Emulator to prevent CEL/limp mode, along with getting a custom driveshaft built to finish the transmission swap.

You can do a search on this forum and see some write ups on people who have done the swaps themselves in the build section.

I myself went with a new CD00A from ConceptZPerformance and used all of SerialNine's swap parts including the CD-Pro kit, CD999 Shifter, transmission mounts and driveshaft adapter. Great setup so far, have enjoyed driving with it, a little costly up front but SerialNine is top quality and I can transfer all their parts to another new transmission if required.

Hope this helps you get started looking into it more.

Cheers.

I would love having a manual in my GS, but I don't ever see it having enough power to justify the cost of such a swap. California smog is too strict. Even just having the manual would make it non-register-able because it's not stock.

Move to Florida. We don't seem to have any laws here of any kind - including the fact that there is no State inspection.

I was under the impression that the transmission has nothing to do with emissions... as long as the engine passes visual/sniff, all is ok... or are there grey areas, here...?

One thing about MI... just about anything goes...and does...

Here's a couple people who asked an expert about it here..
https://www.smogtips.com/smog-questi...on-with-Manual
https://www.smogtips.com/smog-question/3459/Swapping-My-Truck-s-Automatic-Transmission-with-Manual

I'm sure anything is possible. But without using an ECU that won't be seeing missing data like those of the automating trans, there will be codes and faults. This will fail the smog right away. There were no GS's with manual, so there are no ECU's to swap. There are ways to upgrade to a newer engine/trans of the same family. But again, the GS doesn't have an available manual trans option available. The only way remotely possible would be to use a 2JZGE and manual trans out of an IS300 with its ECU and harness. This gets quite expensive and if I asked about it, I'm sure it would get denied as legal. You Couldn't use a 2JZGTE with a manual out of a Supra, or import one, because the engine was never available in a GS here and would produce much different numbers on the sniffer. I'm not sure if better or worse. Anyways, pretty sure it's impossible. A person would always have to pay for a "dirty smog" which is unreliable to always be available, makes selling a car, if need be, very difficult because a smog needs to be done at the time of transfer of ownership.

Ok so here is a link to why the IS300's engine and trans wouldn't work https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...-question.html. As we can see from what happened here.. You can't run a manual trans without an ECU for it. You can't run the ECU with out the right harness, and you cant run the IS300 ECU in a GS because the body connections wont go into it, only it's engine harness connections. So basically, making this work would be an absolute nightmare and at th end of the day would probably not be legal.

You can avoid computer errors by leaving the stock solenoids hooked up so the car thinks it still has an automatic transmission attached or use resistors for the same effect. Or use a pre-made A/T simulator.

Not sure that is the issue. Believe CARB requires you to use an engine the same, or "newer", then the car it's in. You can put an LS crate in to a Miata, yet only the NA (ODB-I), yet not the NB (ODB-II). There's a legal and smogged 2JZ-GTE Mustang out there somewhere.
