Default 99 GS300 check engine & VSC lights on.

My check engine light and VSC lights just came on. Car is idling rough, almost like it's not running on all six cylinders. Kind of shuddering. Any ideas ? I did a search and came up with maybe replacing the oil control valve. Appreciate any suggestions and help.

Is it ok to drive like this, or will it cause engine damage ?

You need to find out what codes are causing the check engine light before you buy any parts

Mine did that after an engine stall (fuel pump failing) and resetting the codes or disconnecting battery for 10 min or so fixed it....

Don't get wrapped around the axle on the codes if there was a stall. nuke em and drive on. VSC fixed.

Some mechanics get bent if one clears the codes. I for one get pi$$ed off, they will go on rabbit trails wasting your $$$ hunting and pecking replacing good parts. Clear it, drive for a couple days, what comes back in 2 consecutive drive cycles is legit, anything, nothing.

Clear the codes.....

I've only gotten the CEL+VSC+VSC OFF once on my '99 GS400 it was my throttle body going bad. Turned the car off and back on and it drove normally. Dropped it off at the dealer the next day and they replaced the throttle position sensor but the car still acted funny like it wanted to stall. Later it was diagnosed that I needed a complete throttle body replacement. Since yours is a GS3 it could be something else though but get it checked out.

Best advice I've gotten yet. Started her up today and she ran fine. Cleared the codes and went for a drive, so far so good. I ordered and OCV valve that is arriving tomorrow, so I'll replace that and see what happens. I totally agree that most mechanics try different things at your expense, so it's best to do your own research first. Clearing the codes and getting the same result at least two or three times makes total sense. Thanks for the input.

How many miles on the car when you had to replace the complete throttle body ? That must've been pricey...

i would take a couple of 20 mile trips before your sure the light doesn't come back on. Some of the codes need to be triggered twice before your check engine light comes on

I have a 2000 lexus gs300 My check engine light and VSC lights comes and goes it started of with just vsc light now engine light has come on along with the VSC one. Car is idling rough, almost like it's not running on all six cylinders. Kind of shuddering. Any ideas ? I did a search and came up with maybe replacing the 02 sensor, once lights have come on I lose power and put my foot flat and still don't move, Appreciate any suggestions and help. I hope it's not a big problem and too pricey to fix.

Start off with determining the codes. But my guess is lean codes and fuel pump. It’s an easy swap and not expensive on rockauto.

do NOT put yourself through hassle of fuel filter without reading my thread on it. Lexus doesn’t recommend changing the filter anyway. No need honestly.

I had similar symptoms on my 2000 Lexus GS300 and it turned out to be the VVTI control valve. I had Toyota replace it for under $600.00 and haven’t experienced any of those symptoms since. Hope this information helps.
