Default Thermostat HELP!

Well this may be the dumbest question I have ever asked, so here we go. I am replacing the t-stat on my gs3 and the previous owner used silicon for the gasket. I just got a new t-stat and rubber gasket but and my question is does the t-stat go on then the gasket or do I put the gasket on then the t-stat???

Because I tried to put the gasket on the housing the the t-stat tightened it down filled and burped the system and it is leaking front the housing!! UGH

Thanks for the help

Common 20 views and no response. I have searched and cant seem to find a clear answer. I am pretty sure the gasket goes on the housing first and the the t-stat goes on.

You don't necessarily have to search in these forums. This is a typical job when installing a t-stat. With the housing off, install the t-stat with the hole in the "up" position. Completely scrape all of the old gasket sealer off the housing (likely your problem) then lay a thin coat on on the outer edges of the housing. I tend to add a thin coat to the other piece of the housing (attached to the block). Wait a few seconds then attach it and bolt it up.

Thanks for the info. I applied a little bit of gasket sealer. Its drying for an hour after that I will fill it and see what happens. Man I hope this works!

Too much drying time. Attach it after a few seconds to allow it to "skin" to the metal surface.

Directions said not to fully tighten it for 1 hour. Full cure time is 24hrs but I should be able to drive it in a few hours right???

I just did my t belt, so I know the feeling. The gasket actually wraps around the tstat, it doesn't go before like I had thought, I did that and it leaked coolant immediately. The gasket is thick and has a groove made for the tstat to fit around. Look at the gasket very closely and you will see what I mean.

Btw, I didn't use any silicone, sealant, I just followed the manual to the T. Good luck!

wbmx1981 is exactly correct,i did the thermostat yesterday.the gasket has a groove that actually goes around the thermostat.just make sure to dry everything good and place the gasket properly and you wont need any gasket sealer or silicone

dammit! Thats what I was wondering because it actually fit better with the gasket over the t-stat. Well I used a little sealant and it worked great. Hopefully it will be fine and next time I will know.

Thanks for the help guys.

You all had me worried there for a minute, with all this talk of a sealent for the t-stat. I changed my t-stat a couple of days ago. I haven't started the car yet so I don't know if it will leak. I did realize that the gasket fits around the the edge of the t-stat rather above or under it. So, I am reasonably confident that it will not leak. But, thanks for making me double-check.

I used the gray sealant and applied a thin coat to the outer housing. The t-stat will hold in place while you apply the sealant to the housing. Never had a leak. I never trust anything other than the gray sealant.

Yeah, you should be good to go! The gasket goes around the tstat like you mentioned. No sealant is needed.
