Default Window Swtich Not Working

Have a 2002 GS300 and the drivers side window switch does not raise or lower the window. It was working intermittently for a while where it would lower and get stuck, then had to sit there working the rocker switch back and forth a zillion times till finally it would raise up again. At times it would act weird and do the opposite of what it was supposed to do. All other windows work okay; just the driver's. Is it just the single switch for this window that needs repair/replace? I know the entire bank of switches runs about $450.00 from dealer and really don't want to go there. Has anyone had similar window operation problem. Appreciate comments. Thanks in advance.

You need to do a little bit of troubleshooting since it could either be the switch, motor, or something else. The service manual has some steps on how to test things out.

Its mostly the MXP box, i believe thats what its called. Its pretty much the computer for the windows, each door has one. You can take off the MPX box off your passenger door and hook it up to your driver side door to test it out before you actually buy one. Do a search since there is already a write up of how to do this process.

Any sources for the service manual? I do have a 99 RX300 official Lexus manual in two volumes, but would like one for my new-to-me 98 400. Is the CD vendor on EBay recommended? Any need for a separate parts list CD? TIA,

BrianD.

Thanks all for comments. Like everything with the Lexus, repairs require a bit more troubleshooting and research.

Change/test your alternator. Or do a voltage test on it asap. I seen your thread about the door locks not working and now this. I had same problem. changed alternator and everything started working. eventually the actuator motors crapped out not long after but the locks didnt work at all and the driverside window would intermittently work. the other windows worked fine. My window has worked perfect since.

To test alternator, turn everything you can on with car running. then check voltage at idle. If under 13.2v change alternator.

Interesting post from KeyKeeper on this problem.

What lead you to investigate the alternator? What is it about a bad alternator that would affect these issues?

The battery light flickered one time when I pulled up to a corner store. It never did it again though so I just got nosy and pulled out the multimeter to see what the reading was. Given EVERYTHING on these cars have some sort of computer or module that controls them, voltage is king...

my situation is SOMEWHAT similar. it's my rear driver window, i press up and it goes up but when it reaches the top, it automatically rolls itself all the way down and won't stay up. i had to go use the window switch on that specific door to roll it up little by little, clicking the window switch up. i haven;t had time to mess with it but i read somewhere that you had to "reset the window" by going to that specific door that has the window issue to use it's switch. press and hold down on the switch and once it's down, continue to hold it for 2 seconds (if not, try 5 seconds). then depress the window to go up and once it's up, continue to depress the switch for 2 seconds (if not, 5 seconds) and that should reset it. at least that's what i found out on google. imma try it today after work and i'll let you know if you haven't tried it already.
