Question Steering wheel telescoping issues

Hey guys I have a 98 Aristo and just recently started to having issues with the my steering column. It's able to move up and down just fine, but it won't extend towards myself at all at times. It has only happened twice so far and some how later in the day or next day it works just fine. When pressing on the button to extend the column I can hear the solenoid clicking so I know it's getting power, but that's it. Anyone have an idea maybe?

It doesn't make sense to me that the gears would be messed up since it intermittently works. Thanks!

One tooth missing from a gear can cause a mess. What happens to a zipper when only ONE tooth is missing?

a mess

could be a couple missing or even just that one and the times it doesnt work its just sliding over that area, after a it slides, it finally catches the gear and begins to work again until it gets back to the open piece.

just my hypothesis.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it's that since it doesn't appear to give a "slipping motion" since I hear the solenoid clicking or seems to be a solenoid anyways. It works as advertised right now though. Kinda weird

As a new member i can tell you there are LOTS of info floating around here concerning this.
Seems to be a common problem with dust build up in the motor as it is a sealed unit, so might be as simple as opening up and servicing.

Personally, my height adjustment motor was not working when it was cold outside. I just moved it to the desired position one warm day and unplugged it. I will do the cleaning/grease fix one day...maybe...

I fixed mine. You need to remove the shell around the steering column. There is a motor that controls the adjustment function. Mine was dirty inside and the copper contacts were not touching causing the problem youre having. It's very easy. Google images of your make and model tilt motor, so you can see what youre looking for. I used compressed air and alcohol and q tips to clean it. Now its working silky smooth. hope this helps.
