I would wholeheartedly recommend the Yokohama tires. I replaced the BFG G-force sports that I had (horrible tire) with Yoko's, and I've never looked back. Discount tire sells them, and a full set of 4 should run you less than $600 out the door.

Sucks that people have to do stuff like this.

wider is better... The more tire you can contact to the ground the better, more traction better handling and a bit better gas mileage. Get as big as the rim can handle (without looking ghey that is!)

any on these page good? I'm looking to spend less than a 100 per tire as I am planning on doing a timining belt/water pump/ball joints/rear brakes as well and I am going to be very broke..

The AVID H4S is a good option for you, IMO. The Falken Ziex ZE-512 would be a second choice. I'm not 100%, but I believe I have the YK520's on my car, and I've been very happy with them.
And I definitely recommend Discount Tire. They've always treated me well, and they take care of any problems without a lost of hassle.

These have worked out great for me. Good grip, pretty quiet and supposed to last 40k miles.
