Default ouchhh...

friday night, i was on my way to go eat ice dream with my girl and my son. On the way there, i smelled something funny inside the car. I asked my girl if she smell anything, she said no, so i thought it was me, had a smelling problems. So the next morning on my way to work my check engine light went on, so i called my friend, hes a Lexus tech here in mass, stoped by my work place and diagnoste my car, also took my car to the dealer and found out that my cat converter no good. He also give me a parts list quote around 2600 dollars, i almost die when he show me the quote. But he said he will take care off me, so im gonna find out in a couple days see how much its gonna really cost me
Have you guys ever need to replace your cat converter before? My GS is a 99
and only have 70k, and i definately never beat on it.

was the smell rotten egg/bodily methane gas smell? If so it was deffinately the cat, all tho a cat going bad is rare. I know the new 4Runners had problems with stinky cats but that is strange that yours would go bad like that.

It's possible that it's the cat. I know the '05 Tacomas had bad cats when they came out. Was your car running rich at all (unburnt gas getting into the cat)???

I think it's required by law that the manufacturer has to warranty the emissions system up to 80k miles(100k in California...I think). You should still be in luck...hopefully. Check your state laws to see if that applies to you. If not, go on a road trip to a state that does heh.

DON'T PAY THAT MUCH!!!! You can find stock headers with the cats on them for probably less than $200 used, just put up a WTB in the classifieds section.

Actually, yeah, I heard that too. I believe that it doesn't matter if your regular warranty is out, the manufacturer still warranties the emissions system up to 100K (for California). Had a car come into my garage w/ this problem, they were out of warranty and didn't have a lot of money, so we recommended that they take it back to the dealer for this special emissions warranty. Dealer honored the warranty and fixed it (since the cat went bad by itself).

Oh yeah, keep in mind the dealer is probably going to try to beat around the bush with replacement under the warranty. They will probably give you the runaround and BS about your powertrain warranty is up. If they still refuse, go find your state laws about mandatory emissions system warranty and lay a copy of that on the service managers desk. This is only necessary if they're not forthcoming about replacing it under warranty in the first place.

Just take them off. If the government is going to mandate that we have cats on our cars then someone else should have to maintain them.

I'm sorry but if you pay 2600 bucks for a cat it better come with an intake, headers and a full exhaust. Cats are not a $2600 job at all. What dealership in MA are you going to? Have you gone to Watertown or Norwood?
