1998 GS's MINOR FLAWS
I know this has been posted before but can you guys tell me what other "flaws" that the first year of the new body GS's has?
So far I know there is
1) Delay reaction when stepping on the gas
2) Rattle from the sunroof/glove compartment
Anything else that I need to know , so in the future if anything goes wrong, I won't flip out and think its something major
thanks guys/gals.

Diesel,
I have a '99 GS 400 with roughly 30,000 miles on it and I have noticed the following problems:
1) Delay reaction while stepping on gas as well (usually about a 1/2 second delay then it jumps)
2) Rattle sounds galore. From the glove compartment, from the moonroof. Once I hear the moonroof rattling, I have to push the cover back and then it stops for a while. Glove compartment - I have tried felt padding with no luck so far.
3) Windows rolled down by themselves in the middle of the night, Service disabled my window feature from the remote key and said it would be "solved soon" (when my car was @ 8,000 miles) according to Lexus headquarters, which noticed the problem in some of the 98's and 99's.
4) Occasionaly dead spots in the steering, fixed by the ECU steering chip though.
5) One of my headlights would periodically refuse to turn on, problem was fixed.
6) Brakes went out @ 10,000 miles when going over an average-sized pothole. Wasn't much fun.
Anyhow, that's what I can remember. There might be more that I'm forgetting. I'd say there are too many flaws for a car of this type - it's a bit dissapointing.

sTwo, Diesel:
I have #2 on STwo's list. the moon roof. only when it is closed. It seems to slip back a bit. Is there a way to tighten the shade? I was thinking about tinting the moon roof with LIMO tint and leave it open all the time. My former car(accord 95 accord v6) had the moon roof with the spotted window treatment like the area next to the rear view mirror. Is there a Place I could get this done as an alternative to tint?
I think I'll get the Steering ECU soon.

Regarding the way to "tighten the shade", I haven't thought about it much before. I'm not sure if going to the dealer would help, have you tried this before?
I am going into Service later this week to see if I can get my ABS setting lowered, and I will go ahead and ask about the moonroof rattling at the same time.
The tinting the top glass of the moonroof doesn't sound like a bad idea either, but we shouldn't have to go through that kind of sh*t over a simple rattle - a rattle which shouldn't be an issue to begin with.
Good luck, talk to you later.

For me, the only problem I have is on the driver side window, when the window automatically goes up and once it hits the "lining" it automatically comes down again.
Stwo, is your other problems common with other lex owners as well or is this just an isolated incident?
Diesel,
Yeah as hard as it is to believe, my windows rolled down by themselves at night time. Lexus Service HQ acknowledged this was a rare problem in the first 2 years of new GS production (98 and 99). They still haven't fixed the problem, which doesn't surprise me btw.
I'm not sure if others have experienced my last 3 problems. They seem isolated if you ask me, but you never know. Hell, maybe my car's just a lemon. Just be aware of them and know that Service should cover all of them under warranty. Later,

Yes the lexus dealers should definately fix these problems free of charge. I don't care if your car is 1000 miles or 100000 miles, these problems do not occur because of long term use of the vehicle, it occurs because of minor design flaws made when they created the new body and should find a way to fix it instead of trying to give us the runaround!

It's not a silly question, people have asked me that before.
To my recollection, both the nights that it happened : my sole 2 GS keys were in my desk drawer. The drawer itself only contained some papers, so nothing could have applied pressure to the remote keys.
I'm as puzzled as just about everyone else as to why this type of a malfunction would occur.

Were the doors unlocked when you got back to the car? If it was not, it was not your remote or the ECU that controls the window roll downs that forced the windows to roll down.
Ask them to change the automation modules for the windows (the multiplex units) in each of the doors.

Hi guys'regarding the mystry windows, did you ever notice any appliance emmiting radio waves in operation at that time.reason! my garage door's remote function will go out sometimes whenever i have a portable radio close to it.the function that allows the door to close by remote will not work but it will allow it to open.
concepts and clijev,
Good questions. To be honest, I can't really answer either one of those. They may further explain why the malfunction occured. Only problem is that it's been raining down here badly as of the last month, and I can't risk re-activating it for now. But I will look out for each of your points once I do. Thanks,
