Im about to buy a gs400. How does the eshift work i thought that if you put it in 3 it will start in 3 but it does it just starts in 1 then 2 then 3. If it started in 3 it would be good in the snow but the way it works is just like putting the shift level in 1 then pushing it up to 2 then 3 etc. I had a volvo loaner and it worked like a manual. Thanks any info would be appreciated.
There is load of information on Eshift which can be accessed by doing a search.
In summary, the number you see with the drive in "M" as controlled by the eshift buttons is the MAX gear the GS would go, while the electronics will enurre you don't redline. The tranny will down shift as it feels it is appropriate and upshift automatically till the max gear as shown and as controlled by the eshift.
Snow mode start in 2nd is controlled by the 'snow' switch (for sure in '98 GS400).

yup salim pretty much say it all. it only states the max gear it will be it, nothing more nothing less. its actually very different from a manual in certain aspect. plus you don't have any control on the 1st gear, the lowest you can put the M is in 2, meaning it will start in 1st and go into 2nd for you when the time is right.
So thats just like in any car if i put the shifter in 3 for example it will go up to three and stay. I was hoping that it would start in like 3 if i put it in 3 since it had eshift but i guess not. Most tiptronic cars when you put it in 3 it will start in that just like the volvo loaner.

as far as i know, even acura doesn't work that way, the number only means the max gear it stays in....
and man, if i put it in 4 in the volvo, that means the car will start in 4th? wouldn't that be slow as hell and you might even stall the car, let alone the amount of stress you put on the tranny?
So Basically, e-shift shifts the car transmission shifts the car automatically? I wanted to try the e-shift but was scared. If that is the case, why use the buttons to shift up and down?

A little formula 1 racing on Toyota's part, so you can keep your hands on the wheel in the twisties and still drop down to 2nd gear.

umm, not totally understand what you are trying to say, but the e shift basically just state the highest gear the car can be in, that's all.
and why buttons on the steering wheel? so that you don't have to take your hands off the wheel. all f1 cars are like that i believe. i thought ferrari are like that too?
personally, I think its abo****ely useless, it doesn't let you downshift to 1st gear, the shifting is far less than "on-time", there's that lag between shifts and the fun factor is close to 0 for me, I much rather trade e-shift for navigation, or extra 10-20hp. If I want to drive manual, I'd go hop in my GTI and go beat it around. Again that's me.
