installation is going to be very expensive too coz' you will need to run a lot of wires fron and back, all the new trunk mats, all harness, etc... not cheap at all
you can try to get it from junk yard, but still looking at a good 3k i suppose, and you need to make sure you get all the necessary harness and stuff, which is not easy at all

here is the cost from Carson toyota(the cheapest place we can get new stuff from basicly..)
navigation screen brand new: ~ $5000
navigation computer brand new~ $4200
those numbers are INSANE i'd say...
on top of that you need the wiring harness from the bashboard(ALL the wires)
best bet will be go online and search for junkyard or if you are in california, go to
Sunvalley, thats where all the dismantlers for the cars located, you might have some luck finding it there!~
installation would be around $1100. not that bad actually.
for 98 to 00 it is a lot easier to find, but they are not DVD based, though.
they will run you about $3k total which isnt too bad..

I have spent too much time looking into this and just on features alone, it is not worth getting the OEM GPS. Throw in the price and it becomes a no brainer (I mean not doing the OEM GPS because of the insanely high cost involved).

Depending how techinical you are, you could create a car PC for MUCH cheaper than this. The various GPS software that you can buy to run on windows blows anything put into a dash out of the water. The stuff you can do with a car computer has endless possibilities.
Granted it'll never look as nice as the factory system and going touch screen will increase the cost. But I'd say for about 2k you could build something pretty impressive. I had mapped out everything I was gunna do with mine and then at the last minute said screw it and ordered my car loaded.
Stuff you can do with a car pc that doesn't come standard in any car gps includes (but isn't limited to)
1. network capabilities (sprintpcs vision service)
a) email
b) web browsing
c) live webcam
2. mp3's
3. dvd's
4. gps (including live traffic/detour updates if you have #1)
5. password protected live theft tracking
6. video security monitoring
7. live odb-II monitoring of car electronics
we're talkin will smith circa 'I Robot' here.. course it wouldn't drive for you
the list really goes on and on. If i didn't have my oem nav system I think I'd probably spend quite a bit of my time obsessing as to how i could improve it
technology has made it so easy now days as well. there are companies specifically making mini-atx mb based systems that run directly off your car. They shutdown and turn off automatically etc.. etc..
I take my laptop with me on trips and during the winter I drive my f150. I'm gunna buy a nice gps setup for the laptop and they make these stands that allow you to mount the laptop for easy viewing access etc.
I'll stop now before I get too excited.

Why even bother, when you can get an aftermarket one. I've seen a double din, navi on Crutchfield

Can you imagine a laptop in your car? Where would you put it? On the dash? You can't put it on the center console because of the gear stick. Where would you install it? I have seen a laptop in a cop car and it has to be the most unsightly piece of crap I have ever seen in a car. We are talking about using your car on a daily basis with a passenger in the front seat. It simply defies logic how you can place an object that is about 14 inchs by 14 inches by 1.5 inches thick somewhere in the front of your car that you can see and operate easily.
Other than the fact that there is no "decent" location to put it, you would have to carry it whenever you leave the car otherwise it would just be an open invitation for thieves to break into your car.
Overall the concept is great the but the disadvantages I pointed out above far outweigh those numerous advantages you pointed out.
I was talking about a laptop.. not a car PC (like i was earlier) .. if your going to build a car pc.. you need to purchase an indash LCD + a computer system designed to be used in a car.
I like my f150.. but it has a very large interior (unlike my gs430).. and I don't really care what it looks like.. which is why i'll most likely just get a laptop stand and have it mounted in the center area of the floor board (60/40 split bench)
When I'm talking car PC .. i'm talking full blown.. fully integrated system.
