i was just reading the new BMW magazine and i guess the new M3s have real Formula 1 style e-shifting (like the up / down paddles on the back of the steering wheel). i always wished the GS was like this. has anyone ever tried to modify the e-shift buttons so that on the back there is an up AND down button? it seems like it would be easy; just switch the wires around...

F1 style paddles? I thought the most they would do is bring the SMG here. IMO the SMG must be funner to operate than the paddle shift, but less efficient of course.

The F1 style shifting is a mechanical part. The tranny still uses the clutch to engage and dis-engage gearing while the GS e-shift is just adding the eletrical control on the torque converter driving automatic tranny. It is impossible to convert the GS e-shift to the F1 style shift. It cost "a lot" to implement the mechanical parts.

I think core was saying that instead of having the DOWN in the front and UP in the back, have DOWN on the left 2 and UP on the right 2, so it'll actually be a left down right up style shift, like the F1 matics.

yeah, that's all i was looking for... i just wanted the effect of the f-1 style, not the mechanics.

So if we actually try to do this, how would be go about doing it?

On the right side, do we just take out the DOWN wire and put it aside and take out the UP wire and connect it to both the UP & DOWN buttons to make both buttons do the UP function.

And then just the reverse for the other side. Does anybody have any experience with removing the steering wheel or messing with the e-shift buttons or anything like that?

I am thinking about really doing this, the current system seems very illogical to me, maybe its just me.

or u could do what I do use the right hand for up shifting and the left for down shifting its alot easier than changing wires around and I think you would have a better grip on the steering wheel , by the way I thought the new M3 only came in a six speed ?

right hand for upshifting, which is on the bottom and left hand for downshifting, which is on the top, my mind couldn't handle that, lol ! Maybe that's why I have only driven my gs on the E-shift ONCE so far !
