I have never had an issue with overheating, was driving home and noticed steam coming from under the hood on the passenger side and car was running hot. Pulled over and shut car off. Fluid in overflow was boiling and melted some of the plastic at the top of the overflow container. Let car cool and added about 6 16oz bottles of water to get the car home which was only about 2 miles.
Changed radiator cap, thermostat and refilled radiator. Idled car with cap off to get air out of the system. Car drives fine and stays cool but building too much pressure and coolant continues to go into the overflow container until their is no longer enough coolant in the radiator and begins to overheat.
If I let the car run with the radiator cap off, once the car heats up it will continue to flow coolant out of the radiator cap until radiator level is low.
The system is not leaking coolant on the ground anywhere and it is building plenty/to much pressure in the system.
Any suggetions or ideas? Blown headgasket? Water pump? Bad radiator? Car has 180,000 miles.
when my head gasket blew i had the same symptoms but i could still drive with out it over heating... im thinking that the water pump is not recuirclating the water through the system
I can still drive it without it overheating but the radiator will continue to loose radiator fluid into the overflow and will eventually overflow the overflow. Once it looses to much fluid to the overflow, after about 30-40 miles, it will begin to overheat due to not enough coolant in the radiator. I fill back up the radiator and it stays at normal temp but continues to loose coolant to the overflow.

Check your oil level and see if you're loosing oil.. also look in the coolant overflow tank and see what color is the coolant in there? and if it has any blackish/brownish chunks.. if thats the case then im afraid its a head gasket problem
