Wow crazy crash test video
I didn't think any car can survive that. Kudos to those that did. That is one of the most extreme tests you can do, so kudos to the cars that failed too. It's more important for crash compatible underride guards be installed on trailers rather than relying on the car. The issue is the underride barrier isn't engaging / interfacing with the energy absorbing crash structures on the car aka "tie-ins." Somehow though, certain manufacturers accounted for this in edge-testing (and by edge i don't mean the edge of anything, i mean unusual scenarios) and build-in hard engagement points far forward and far outboard combining with very strong UHSS >1500mpa unibody steel. IIHS has done similar tests but none as crazy as this and with this many high end vehicles. i've never seen anything like this.
very expensive.

also... don't fall asleep/check your phone etc and veer into a parked trailer. good chance your passenger's head will come off. if not your own.
more and more trailers should be using improved/updated underrride guards but don't count on it

Yes, moral of the story, don't follow too close to trucks unless you want to be decapitated. The A pillar takes most of the force.
They also did frontal - They think there are welding faults on the Lexus ES's A-pillar (at least the door opened, so no big deal).
Rear end tests are interesting to watch, the Land Rover did poorly on that for a big SUV.

Out of common sense, I've steered clear of semi-trucks my entire life after seeing a truck tire blow-out and damage a VW bug driving along side the truck. However, now that I've witness this crash test, I'll double-down on my efforts to stay clear of trucks! It always amazes me how some drivers seem oblivious to the dangers, and have no issues driving next to trucks on the freeway when there are alternatives (like slowing down or speeding up to get away).
And, it's not just the inherent danger of truck design to be leery of. Truck drivers seem to be overworked and completely impatient with those they share the road with (us). Too, I don't think many truckers give a rat's ask about the threat their rigs pose (understandable considering the cluelessness of most drivers)!

Interesting how strong the model 3 A pillar is on this semi test. While the rest of the pack just folds like pancake.
Having seen this, I’m keeping a long distance behind any Semis in my ES lol.
