Cup Issue
There is one thing about the ES (and most cars) is the cupholders WILL NOT hold a "supersized" or "Great biggie" Drink. I almost took a dermel rotary tool to it tonight but I was restrained by a freind. What do you guys do?? This is pissing me off to the point where i'll drop however much I have to for a "replacement cupholder" Does something that 'silly' exist?
This is just driving me crazy, its a good thing I have a few freinds who do thermo-injecting molding (never thought that would come in handy)
More importantly........ does this bother anyone else or am I the only one?

Yeah, that cup holder is only good for drinks in aluminum cans, and those small-size spring water bottles (i.e. Poland Spring, Evian, etc). For the "big guns" like the plastic bottle drinks and Gatorades, I usually wedge them between the driver's seat and the door. Hey, whatever works man...
Yeah i AGREE, THEY ARE A HASSLE. And ON TOP OF IT. Since i HAVE AN AFTERMARKET RECEIVER, IT'S WORSE. The CUPS LEAN AGAINST IT AND EITHER CHANGE THE SETTINGS, TURNS IT UP, OR CHANGES THE SONG. It SUX. I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE PLACED IT BETTER. BUT OH WELL, MY LAP IS FINE FOR NOW.
When I get fast food, I usually just order a smaller drink that will fit in the cupholder. More often, I have 1 liter bottles of pop or water which I set between the e-brake and the passenger seat. They stay in place real well unless I take a very abrupt turn or stop. It is a slight nuisance that big drinks won't fit in the cupholders, and they are in a somewhat inconvenient spot for the radio, but there are cupholders out there that are much worse.
Has anyone else noticed that most owner's manuals state that the cupholders are not meant to be used when the vehicle is moving? Clears them of any liability if you spill something, but I still thought it was a little funny; the whole point of the cupholders is to hold the drink while your driving.

Yeah that is, but I guess nowadays companies have to protect themselves from getting sued. Someone with a great lawyer could make a case against Lexus for a hot drink spilled on them. People sue for anything to get money!
my solution is that if i want a big drink to go to taco bell or mcdonalds, cause they have the cups that have regular sized bottoms so they still fit in my cup holder. here's what i've learned, either don't drink in your LEXUS, or just deal with where the cup holders are right now. besides, leaving the cup in your car for more than 15 minutes just gets water drops all over your wood, so i try not to drink in the car often anyway....
I hate the cup holder in the 97 ES . Who ever designed it is a total idiot.
The arm swings outward very easily and is very low (covers 1/5 of the lower cup), so if your talking a turn its very easy to tip your cup/bottle. When I first got my car, I learned this lesson the hard way. Took a quick turn and whaaaam large dunkin dounuts coffee all over my passenger side seat. Luckily, I wasn’t to far from home, so I went back and cleaned it up.
I also condoned the leather the week before so I think it helped in preventing stains.

Hey nj, I know what you mean about the cup holder on the '97. I especially don't like the location (too close to the armrest). You could accidentally knock over the drink if you take your arm off of the armrest. The picture below shows the cup holder for the '97 ES.
I really like the cup holder on the late-gen GS... simple design, deep holders, and out of harm's way

cant have cupholders like that in the old es though, parking brake is there. in the camry they moved the parking brake really close to the drivers seat and threw in two cupholders parallel to the brake, sorta looks funny in my opinion, but they seem to work....
the worst option is to buy a plastic cup hoder that clips into the vent ,usually holder larger drinks ok
looks like shyt
but works
i personally love the new clk cup holders
i haven't found it very usefull either
it has a lower base and upper claw thing ( so it holds 2 cups)
but it has to be the sexiest cup holder ever
if there is such a thing
( it has a chrome button that when pressed releases the claw which swivels clockwise while rising and opening the claw ) a real beauty to look at

I usually have no problems when I have drinks. I just put it on the right side of the cupholder, so it won't block most of the buttons I use on my player. Only other problem are the super sized drinks. I don't order them too often, but when I do, I just open up the armrest thing, and drop it in there. No problems at all. Just make sure you have some **** in there so it won't go up and down and around...
