Newbie here working on my lady's 96 ES300. I'm a Modest Experienced DIY 911 Guy and decide to DIY hers.

I read a bunch of threads about the P0401 issue " EGR Flow Insufficient" and Cold Start Issue.

Tested the VMV (Vacuum Modulator Valve or Solenoid or Assembly) it would not hold a vacuum so I went to my local Toyota Dealer and bought the VMV for a 92 Camry Toyota Part #25870-62020 $105.48 (Parts Guy hooked me up and sold it for $80) Autozone had it for $78.99 shipped in 2 days. Other places sell them for $64 or $45 but you have to wait for it be shipped and not OEM.

Prior to this I took off the VMV and cleaned it out. Still had cold start issue but when warm it started right away. I reset the CEL but the CEL came back on after 10-15 miles.

Literally 5 mintues in the Dealer's parking lot (they were not too happy about that, but no one complained) and popped in the new VMV with a 10MM socket wrench, disconnected the battery. Bingo Trouble Code Gone, Started Right Up and running 100+ miles no issues.

Hope this helps someone with like issues.

Cheers

Jim
Hi,
Do you have a step by step on how to change the VMV? I have the same issue but was told the gas tank needs to be dropped in order to fix the issue and change the solenoid.

Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks.

Wow, it has been so long since I did, this, but it was pretty straight forward, just get the part and swap.

Are you sure it is the VMV and not the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Also How did they determine it was the solenoid? that kinda does not make sense, do they mean fuel pump?

Well I'm getting the same engine code, but I only get it when the weather is warm, it hasn't happened in the winter. And when it's the first start of the day it takes a few seconds to start up, but if I've started it up, and start the car later, it starts with no hesitation whatsoever.

I just got a 1998 ES300 and it has bumper damage, nothing too bad so the airbags didn't go off. However, I was wondering if anyone had tips for how to remove and replace the front bumper without effecting the airbags? Thank you! (best car I've ever owned!)

Alright guys i did this today and took only 15mins.
1) need flat panel LED
2) need long wires

connect one end of the wire to the normal dome metal piece and other end to the front map lights via underneath the roof liner and then take that flat panel led and connect to it. and thats it!!
I burned 2 times the fuse because i touched the wires together. Not good. The map lights works separately. i just didn't show it in the video

I took a video of it :

Yesterday the AC quit and all items on the bottom of the center console controls (fan controls, front and rear defroster, heat, outside temperature indication, etc.) are dead. Have looked at fuses but don't see any blown. Any suggestions?
