My stable has always been a truck + car + motorcycle + and usually a boat.
I have never owned anything but a long bed truck and never thought about it. Lol
I've downsized as I got older to just a small suv but I still won't buy a short bed truck.
Why not just go SUV if you need a tiny bed to put stuff from walmart or lowes once in a while?
At least that's my thinking anyway, for now... lol
For one SUVs are considerably more expensive. Actually go price say an Expedition and an F150, equipped similarly the Expedition is more expensive. Same is true of a Tahoe and a Silverado. Trucks also have a LOT more 2 row cab room, second row legroom in a full sized truck is huge. I also dont like my stuff rolling around inside the cabin, so a truck bed with the tonneau cover is attractive.
Which is critically important for taking the expressway to the mall.
Doesn't matter where. Mall, grocery store, bank, etc. When some fool runs into you and totals their car and just scratches your truck you'll see what we mean. :-)

Our unibody Q7 cost $2,328.92 to repair when we got rear-ended by some fool going ~40. As I recall, your BOF LX cost dramatically more to repair recently.....

That has nothing to do with what I said lol. In any case that's what insurance is for.
That does sound crazy though, do you have a picture of the damage?
I don’t agree with the concept of a “poser vehicle”. Every one of us who drives anything but an economy car has a “poser vehicle”, a vehicle that is designed for way more than we use it for.
disagree... every time you drive your mercedes it's being used exactly as intended, which is to give its driver the best all-round luxury experience possible... even more so when being driven quickly on the highway
pickup trucks are meant to haul things and be used for work purposes, and you sacrifice everything when you use one just as a personal vehicle... driving a pickup truck as a daily vehicle is like walking while constantly wheeling an empty suitcase behind you

from my observations the vast majority of pickup truck drivers (including a friend of mine) don't need a pickup truck at all, but just like the idea of driving a truuuuuckkkk more than anything
it kinda bums me out that the 'ute' never caught on here

I do, but since it's white and in poor light it doesn't show really well. There was an imprint of the grill badge in the bumper cover, most of the internal clips were broken, and the crash bar was damaged. They replaced the crash bar, bumper cover, and lower valence.
The other driver's Tiguan was rather misshapen and leaking coolant, but somehow still driveable.
I have a full size truck and pretty much drive it daily. I think it's a bit outdated to state that a truck's one and only purpose is to haul things. If that was the case, they wouldn't have increased the interior passenger space, added all of the creature comforts, and turned them into something quite premium inside. Trucks have changed to be both people haulers and cargo haulers. I fail to see why people who drive full size trucks as daily drivers are somehow worse than those who drive full size SUVs as daily drivers.
Anyway, I bought a full size truck because I do need a full size truck to pull our travel trailer and take the family on trips. I do frequently load up the bed of it at Lowe's or the local landscaping shop. Or to throw our bikes in the back and head out with the family for a day of bike riding. It would feel ridiculous, at least to me, to use it for those purposes and then just leave it parked all other times and never drive it otherwise. To me, THAT is what would be wasteful.
Side note, when we go on a road trip, even without the trailer, we take the truck. Why? Because it's the most comfortable for the four of us over a long drive. None of our other vehicles have anywhere near that much passenger space.

well that i agree with
also it's great that you actually use your truck to its potential... i'm just saying that the majority of truck people would be completely fine with a RAV4 or something

I much prefer a body on frame SUV over a cross over which I really hate (for the most part)

Uhhhhh no they definitely wouldn't. Trust me on that one. A Rav4 over my LX? I barely even look at crossovers when I see them let alone would I ever buy one. More power to those who do, but not here. That's for sure.
Pickups and SUVs are the new luxury cars these days, for better (me) or worse (you).
You said yourself Steve drives his S-Class and it's not overkill because it's a luxury car, it's the same thing with high end trucks. I love having basically an 8 passenger LS that can do insane stuff off road and that could drive through the absolute worst conditions that would strand most drivers. It also has a huge V8 which we all know I love and no BS fuel economy tricks.

i don't mean would they be happy lol but in terms of would they be noticeably more limited in the activities they already do? i don't think so
most pickups i see on the road (like 99% of the time) have an empty bed and aren't towing anything, and for me personally it's not worth it to limit maneuverability and use way more fuel for no reason just to have the whole truck image
and yes i agree high end pickups "are" the new luxury cars, but as someone with 2 fantastic luxury cars i could never see it that way... it's still a tall heavy truck that you can't work your way through traffic nearly as well in

I do not like crossovers or understand the point of them. Two years ago, I went to Europe with a buddy and our rental car was a Citroen crossover. It was overall a low quality vehicle, but also handled poorly and had the same interior space as a compact. It was also too tall to fit in some parking garages such as the one at the hotel in Nürnberg.
This year, I went again with the same buddy and we had a Hyundai Kona hybrid. It was less roomy than my Civic in that, with the rear seat folded down, you could to recline the front seat much. My friend who is 6’0” could not recline at all. The handling was not as bad as in the Citroen but it was still not good. It also had the height issue for the garages with an “elevator” system. I would have preferred any regular car to a high compact car with big tires.
