I'm sure it's quiet inside, but yes. My LS430 the fans always run and they aren't very loud at all.

anyone know why only the toyota trucks/suvs (4Runner and GX in particular stand out to me) make like a crazy amount of fan whooshing noise on startup?

if it's just to sound more heavy duty and truck-like then i approve since it does sound kinda beastly lol

The loudest fan I had was GX's, esp. when start up. It would scare someone standing next to it. But inside is all quiet.

Where you live do you have vertical or horizontal traffic lights.

Its the stupid clutch fan, I guess in the GX/LX/4Runner they are needed for offroading when the engine is under extreme loads. From what I know, LS430 also had the fan, but GS430 didn't.

I wonder what the difference is and why they have different styles.

I think a lot of it is probably different manufacturers and how they design them.

I owned a streetlight for awhile it looks much bigger when you're right next to it. Yes those things are massive.

Texas has horizontal traffic lights almost everywhere else I've been vertical.

LX cooling fans come on every single startup. Deliciously truck-like. It's just a pleasant whoosh from inside. Also the fans you faintly hear as you drive off intermittently, especially when it's hot. I swear last week when it was 100 degrees the fans stayed on well into 2nd gear. They usually cycle off once you're above 5-10MPH.

Oh and about the traffic lights, they weigh TONS also.... Once I saw a storm blow one off into one of the worst intersections in town it was a hell of a crash, I called 911.

The GX460 and LX570 are louder than the LX470. I think they did it on purpose. My 4.7 is silent…my 4.0 is not as quiet. I think they did by design. More “truck” like and less boring snooze fest .

I like the fans. There is no heat-soak at all, if there was it would be different. Step on that gas and the revs go up fast.

That's strange, the 400/430/460 all are nearly totally silent fan wise even after you push them super hard in hot weather.

Viscous coupling fans start "locked" when you first kick the engine over then unlock quite quickly when the fluid gets forced out and there isn't enough heat to have the clutch engage. That is actually an easy way to know it's working properly, it's intended to allow less drag on the engine unless the airflow is actually needed. On my 17 ram I had, I simply removed the clutch fan entirely since it was not needed at all for my uses.
