I saw a pretty janky red R129 SL like mine but older with aftermarket yellow foglights and a top in terrible condition, not airtight. Tried to grab a picture. He had an aftermarket steering wheel, too.
Oh man, I was looking at this VW on my cell earlier today and thinking how's that car not rusted to pieces yet.
My VW diesel back in the late 80's was already rusting to pieces and that was 40 years ago.
Now that I'm logged in on my laptop and can see better, yeah I can see the rust. lol
What a find, haven't seen one of these in decades and there weren't that many around back in the day being a diesel and a convertible.

Now you know why your cherry SL500 is such a head turner. lol
I haven't seen any on good condition down here in FL.

My dad bought the first Prius when it came out and funny ya'll say that cuz the new one is light years ahead of it's predecessors in style and taste and probably everything.
I saw someone driving the older original one just a couple days ago and all I could think was dam that car is ugly and hasn't improved at all with age aka didn't age well. JUST IMO of course lol
My dad had a Rabbit of that vintage when I was little--I think his might have been a '78--but his was neither a diesel nor a cabrio. We were in an accident when I was maybe 4 (still in a car seat), and while it was repaired and looked pretty much perfect, he said it transformed from the best handling car he'd ever driven to the worst. He wound up selling it to a college student for like $400.
I remember it was a 3-speed, but 1st was so short as to be almost useless in normal driving, so it was basically "low/high" with a clutch.
I've been driving my father-in-law's 2013 X5 for a while and didn't notice this until today. When did this start and end? Was this only for this generation? It reminded me of the non-matching Mercedes side mirrors.

Lexus LC500 does the same weirdness.
That is the best Lexus color combo for any current Lexus past or present

All the Bangle-era BMWs were like that. When I had my E60 I was taken aback by that too. They were symmetrical before and after.

Typical of Germans, both mine are like that I think to give passengers something to hold on to
