Did you know that its illegal to sell gas below cost? Reason why is Buck-ees, for those of you in the midwest. They make so much money on their huge store that they tried to sell gas below cost as a loss leader and all their competitors reaxcted so negatively they made it illegal. So Buck-ees sells gas at cost.
Didn't know that. Is it illegal by state or is this a Federal law?
I believe it was a state law in Texas where Buck-ees originated, but most states today have a similar law.
I see. Well on a different track, the price of gas here has gotten so high that the authorized limit charged to the credit card is sometimes not enough. There is a Shell gas station near my work that has a Loop car wash that is discounted, and if you are a Loop member you get points and free car washes and other free stuff like Soda, chips, Energy drinks etc. I was paying for a car wash and a women came in and said the pump suddenly stopped working. The cashier told her that she reached the authorized limit ($100) and needed to slide her card again for round 2. To make matters worse, gas stations like Chevon, Shell, Vellero, and Mobile have different pricing for cash and credit. If you use your credit card than the price is .20 cents higher per gallon. It basically erases points you would be earning. Another reason I prefer Costco, they don't charge you extra to use credit card and you get points if you use your Costco CC
Different prices for cash and credit have been a thing here for years
I've really never gone to any other gas station but Costco except Arco on trips... So I never noticed this. Another reason for me to move away from gas burning vehicles

I see it more here locally than I do when I’m on a road trip. It started during the last gas price crisis in 2008.
This thread reminded me it’s Tuesday! We just got back from WV in the Pacifica, haven’t been driving the Mercedes but this shows you how I always get gas on Tuesday regardless of what’s left!
I wonder how many gas stations in the future will get "compliance" chargers that will provide for some tax breaks or comply with upcoming laws, and how many of them are actually going to be functional.

Yes and no. Somewhere in remote areas where real estate is virtually free, maybe they can allocate a few spots for EV chargers. In the major cities where the hourly costs of real estate far exceeds the revenue generated by EV chargers, the gas station owners are not interested in a single EV idly taking up their parking spots for hours, resulting in net loss for them. They want customers coming into their store in and out, buying things that generate a profit.
Thus they are going to be interested in the EV charger to malfunction, and for the parking spots to be used by paying customers.

You’re stuck in perspective, as usual.
I know several people who own gas stations. They don’t make money on gas. They make money in their store, their garage, or their carwash. What will happen is they will adapt what services they offer to attract people who want to charge to the station where they can sell them other things like food, etc while they charge.
EVs do not sit idle for hours. 20 minutes…and that amount of time is shrinking. There are benefits to having a customer with you for 20 minutes vs 5 or 10. Most gas customers never come into the store, EVERY EV customer will.
Land is also not as valuable everywhere as it is in NYC. You already have few gas stations in NYC. There is plenty of space for this most places.
Wait and see. Once it becomes financially attractive to install chargers, you’ll see them pop up everywhere.

You are out of your mind. This utopian world will never exist.
