This is the letter NHTSA sent to Tesla - look at all the evidence they are requiring. This is setting a very interesting precedent that is long overdue - they need to clearly define responsibility matrix between automakers and drivers for vehicles with driver assist technologies.
^^^^^ I don't always agree with Scotty (or his video-antics), but he was right on the money with this one. That's EXACTLY what's wrong with these self-drive autopilots....they are fine in the usual, pre-programmed casual-driving environments, but often can't deal with the unexpected or out-of-norm.
Thats just it, they aren't "self driving", they are driving aids. The concept is the driver would take back over when they encounter something unexpected.
Anticipating and reacting to unexpected situations to where they can truly drive themselves requires AI which is still in development.

Exactly why they shouldn't call it Autopilot or Full Self Driving. Regardless of the disclaimers, the name by itself is potentially misleading.

mmkay... that may be what they are, but that's...

THAT is the point. What tesla is doing is incredible, but they don't need the misleading hype which was clearly done to bolster sales, but it's not honest, and it's lead to idiots being overconfident with it.
Regardless of what it is called, like I predicted many years ago in the other thread, people will abuse such tech because this is just what people do. Anyone abusing this system pretty much deserves a Darwin award, but unfortunately they hurt others in the process.
