My E90 3-series has these, and they're indeed horrid. The Porsche ones are a similar design, yet they managed to make them dramatically worse. Here is the $200k 911 Turbo S:

My Polestar 2 has to be in the top 10 vehicles with poor cup holder placement.

I always thought the older Lexus had terrible cup holders. Out of the 90’s-mid 00’s cars, I thought the second generation GS had some decent ones.

The newer Lexus are much better but not perfect. I’ve had a few 3 Series BMW’s and I thought the cup holders sucked too. Especially the pop out ones in the dash. Those always got stuck in the dash for some reason.

On my RX300, I had issues with the fact that you had to either open up the top part of the center console or pull the one section out to get to the other ones. Sure I got more, but when I got my CT200h, perfect positioning for them like I have seen in most cars.

That's partly because, in Europe, actually looking at the road while driving is considered more important than cell phones, texting, newspapers, coffee/latte, soft-drinks, electric shavers, stock prices on the screen, and other delights in the world of distraction.
