Arrow February 2016 Sales Thread

U.S. auto sales, after being slowed last month by winter storms, are on pace to reach the highest level for any February since 2000, some forecasts released this week show.

Purchases delayed from January and a bevy of Presidents Day deals are likely to push February sales up about 8 percent, according to Edmunds.com and LMC Automotive. That would result in a seasonally adjusted, annualized selling rate of 17.7 million units, up from 17.6 million in January and 16.4 million a year ago.

TrueCar said it expects sales this month to climb 6.6 percent higher than February 2015, with a SAAR of 17.5 million. Kelley Blue Book was more optimistic, projecting a 9 percent gain and a SAAR of 17.9 million.

The February 2000 SAAR came in at 18.9 million.

“Thus far, 2016 is off to the races, with February looking to keep the selling rate in line with expectations,Jeff Schuster, LMC’s senior vice president of forecasting, said in a statement. “Consumers seem to be shrugging off the volatility in the stock market and higher interest rates. Very low fuel prices and many new vehicles in showrooms should help drive another strong year for auto sales.”

January and February are typically the 2 weakest months of the year. Since 1989, February sales have been an average of 13 percent better than January, but this year’s forecasts call for a month-over-month increase of about 18 percent. Sales tend to pick up significantly in March as the traditional spring selling season begins.

Analysts continue to expect industry sales in 2016 to beat the record of 17.47 million set last year.

“Demand for new cars and trucks this month looks strong enough to lift new sales in February to the highest level in over 15 years,” Eric Lyman, TrueCar’s vice president of industry insights, said in a statement. “It’s a sign that consumers remain generally confident in the economy and their finances -- and are even willing to brave winter weather to buy a new vehicle.”

Longer loan terms and leasing

Long loans and leases are expected to account for a record 65.1 percent of all retail sales in February, up from 64.3 percent in January, according to J.D. Power, which works with LMC to forecast sales. It said consumers are on track to spend more than $32 billion on new vehicles this month, a February record and $3 billion more than a year ago.

Gasoline prices have continued falling in February, driving sales of pickups and SUVs higher and forcing automakers to raise incentives on car nameplates to keep inventories from piling up too much.

J.D. Power said cars are expected to account for just 42 percent of sales in the month, the lowest in any February on record. The nationwide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $1.715 today, according to the AAA motor club, 11.1 cents less than a month ago and 61.3 cents below a year ago.

Overall, incentive spending this month is 11 percent more than in February 2015 but 0.5 percent less than last month, TrueCar said. It said incentives rose 29 percent at General Motors, 22 percent at Volkswagen Group of America and 15 percent at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles but fell at Subaru, Hyundai and American Honda.

TrueCar, KBB and Edmunds are all projecting a double-digit sales increase for Ford Motor Co., whose sales were down in January. The forecasts call for gains of 9 to 11 percent for FCA, 8 to 9 percent at Nissan North America, and 7 to 13 percent for American Honda.

GM, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. and Hyundai-Kia are all expected to post below-average increases. TrueCar and Edmunds said VW sales are expected to be down about 2 percent, while KBB projects a 4 percent gain.

i think many people are buying cars because interest rates are low and many think that's not likely to last, plus during the big recession many held off buying a car, and now they're feeling good enough to do it or have to (their old car is done). as the article also says, low gas prices helps a lot!

Texas economy was on the slide since summer of 2015, but the auto dealers were not feeling the effect; on the contrary had record sales. But 2016 will be a different story with the massive lay-offs in the energy sector. The severe impact of this on the local economy will not be felt by the general public till later this summer. Most of the businesses in TX, OK, LA are already hurting due to corporations CapX total shut down. Historically speaking, in these three states December 2016 will be an opprtune time to get good deals on 2017 luxury automobiles.

Ford Motor Company’s U.S. sales were up 20 percent in February versus a year ago with 217,192 vehicles sold. Retail sales grew 11 percent – the company’s best February since 2005.

Retail sales gains came across the product portfolio. Cars gained 6 percent, trucks increased 5 percent, and SUVs were up 22 percent.

Ford SUV sales last month – the best February in company history – totaled 65,016 vehicles, up 28 percent versus a year ago. Edge jumped 91 percent, Explorer was up 18 percent and Escape gained 14 percent.

F-Series sales were strong, too, with 60,697 vehicles sold – a 10-percent increase – marking Ford’s best February for F-Series in a decade.

“We saw a solid industry last month and a strong month for Ford, as customer demand for our newest vehicles – including new high-end series on Explorer and Edge – helped Ford increase its average transaction prices at almost double the industry average,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Offering more high-end options for truck and SUV customers and having the capability fleet buyers value as they are reinvesting in their fleets are strengthening our business.”

Transit sales increased 70 percent last month, with 11,496 vans sold – adding to Ford’s total van sales of 18,407 giving Ford its best February van performance since 1979.

Lincoln sales of 8,039 vehicles increased 30 percent, with the all-new Lincoln MKX up 109 percent, helping support the brand’s record February sales.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) continued to grow its retail sales and market share in February, a trend that began April 2015. Since then, retail deliveries have been up every month compared to a year ago, and retail market share has been up in 10 of 12 months. February retail deliveries totaled 179,958 units, up 7 percent. GM’s estimated retail share is up 0.4 percentage points.

The Chevrolet brand remained the industry’s fastest-growing full line brand in February, with retail deliveries climbing 13 percent compared to a year ago. Estimated retail share is up 1 percentage point on a year-over-year basis. In addition, Cadillac retail deliveries were up 4 percent.

“Our strategy is simple: grow profitable retail share while maintaining discipline with inventory levels and incentive spending, while reducing rental deliveries,” said Kurt McNeil, GM’s U.S. vice president of sales operations.

Due to a planned reduction in rental deliveries, GM’s total sales of 227,825 were down slightly year over year. GM reduced daily rental deliveries by about 16,500 units, or 39 percent in February. GM grew its Commercial business in February for the 28th consecutive month.

GM expects to operate with about a 70-days supply of vehicles throughout the year in most months, with some months higher or lower. February month-end inventories were at a 67-days supply. GM continues to grow retail market share with incentives below domestic companies and other key competitors.

As a result of lower rental deliveries, GM expects its fleet mix in 2016 to be about 20 percent of total sales, compared with a historical range of 22 to 24 percent. In 2015, GM reduced rental deliveries by about 50,000 units compared to 2014. In the first two months of 2016, rental deliveries are down about 30,000 units, compared to a year ago.

“The redesign of our full-size pickups and SUVs, and the smart bets we made to enter the small crossover and mid-size pickup segments with vehicles like the Chevrolet Trax and Colorado couldn’t have been timed better,” McNeil said. “The economy is growing, Millennials are becoming a major force in the market and we’re doing everything we can to meet retail demand, including increased production of mid-size pickups and investing in additional V8 engine capacity.”

Millennials (customers under age 34) now buy more new vehicles than any generation besides Baby Boomers, and they account for 20 percent of GM sales, up from 5 percent in 2010.

GM’s products plans are tailored to these generational shifts. Redesigned vehicles launching in 2016, including Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, Camaro, Malibu and Trax. At the same time, Buick is expanding its portfolio with the Cascada convertible and Envision crossover, GMC is launching an all-new Acadia crossover, and Cadillac is launching the all-new CT6 prestige sedan and XT5 crossover.

“We continue to be optimistic about the continued strength of the U.S. economy,” said Mustafa Mohatarem, GM’s chief economist. “Employment remains strong, interest rates remain at historically low levels and gas prices are stable, so we expect auto sales to remain strong for the foreseeable future.”

Leasing helps numbers in a big way.
Every 2-3 years,a lease is up.Then in most cases a new lease.

Mar 1, 2016 - TORRANCE, Calif.
Honda Division sets new February benchmark on sales of 106,212 vehicles
All-new 2016 Honda Civic sets a new monthly record for the second month in a row with sales up 31.7 percent; with all-new Civic Coupe set to go on sale mid-March
Acura ILX, the brand's entry point and most youthful model, was up 56.4 percent
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported record February sales of 118,985 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 12.8 percent. Honda Division set a new February record with 106,212 units sold, up 14.9 percent; Honda car sales reached 57,267 while record February truck sales totaled 48,945 for the month. Acura sales totaled 12,773 with sedan sales of 4,683 and trucks reaching 8,090 units in February.

Honda
Fresh off of a record January and led by record sales of the all-new 2016 Civic Sedan and the CR-V along with a strong performance by the Accord, the Honda brand set a new February sales mark.
Civic, relying only on sales of the Sedan, was the brand's best-selling model for the month, setting a new February record, with sales up 31.7 percent to 27,707 units; the All-new Civic Coupe will accelerate that momentum when it goes on sale in mid-March.
Also bucking the light truck trend, Accord was up 19.3 percent on sales of 25,785 units.
CR-V, America's best-selling SUV, was up 13.2 percent on record February sales of 25,250 vehicles.
Odyssey had a double digit gain, up 11.4 percent with 8,994 units sold for the month.
In high demand but short supply, Pilot sold 9,572 units, a strong month, but a 24.2 percent decrease compared to February 2015, when high inventories and aggressive sell-down efforts of the prior generation model led to near-record sales.
"Led by the all-new Civic, Honda cars are defying industry trends, even as our light truck models are red hot this winter," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. "With more versions of the Civic yet to go on sale and an all-new Ridgeline on the way, Honda is primed for an incredibly strong start to the year."

Acura
While overall sales were down slightly for February, strong sales of the ILX, the brand's gateway model; the launch of the Acura NSX online vehicle configurator in late February and a refreshed MDX set to debut at the New York Auto Show this month portend a strong year as the Acura brand approaches its 30th anniversary in late March.
ILX followed up on a strong January result, rising an impressive 56.4 percent on sales of 1,500 units in February.
MDX, challenged by low inventory levels, was the brand's best-selling model for the month with sales of 4,292 units in February, down 5.7 percent.
"As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Acura brand in March and the launch of the NSX this spring, it's encouraging to see the same kind of excitement associated with the early days of the brand," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. "With a strong gateway model attracting new customers to the brand in the ILX, and an updated MDX about to debut at the New York auto show, it's not simply cliché to say that the best is yet to come."

Audi reported that its February 2016 sales increased 2.3% to 11,718 vehicles, a total that stands as the brand’s 62nd straight month of record U.S. sales.

Audi achieved its best-ever February sales in the brand’s U.S. history. The previous February record was set in 2015 with sales of 11,455 vehicles. Through the first two months of 2016, Audi U.S. sales rose 2.5% from last year to 23,568 vehicles.

February results were bolstered by sales of the A7 and Q7 models. The A7 posted an 87% increase from last February. Consumer demand for the all-new Audi Q7 remained high, resulting in a 63% increase over last February. Year-to-date sales of this luxury SUV model rose 111% over the same time period in 2015.

“There is robust demand for models at the top end of our lineup, such as the A7 and Q7,” said Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “This gives us confidence that our sales momentum will continue with the upcoming launches of the all-new A4 and R8 this spring.”

Audi Certified pre-owned vehicle sales set a new February record, with a 0.4% gain on 3,713 CPO vehicles sold.

Audi holds the longest running monthly record sales streak in the premium car market according to a competitive sales report from MotorIntelligence.com.
