Whats funny is we know why Toyota/Lexus incentives are up. Horrible year in regards to recalls/press and BMW/Benz fighting for #1. What isn't funny is Nissan/Infiniti continue to have HIGHER incentives for no reason outside of its the only way they can sell cars.

Edmunds.com Reports True Cost of Incentives: Incentives Down Nearly Ten Percent Since 2009
http://www.edmunds.com/help/about/pr...7/article.html

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — December 1, 2010 — Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, estimated today that the average automotive manufacturer incentive in the U.S. was $2,470 per vehicle sold in November 2010, up $31, or 1.3 percent, from October 2010, but down $255, or 9.4 percent, from November 2009.
"Once again, perception trumped reality as car-shoppers pursued expected bargains during a traditional holiday deal weekend," stated Jessica Caldwell, Director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "In truth, incentives simply aren't increasing at the rates suggested by the year-end advertising campaigns."

According to Edmunds.com, combined incentives spending for domestic manufacturers averaged $3,221 per vehicle sold in November 2010, up from $3,115 in October 2010. However, European automakers decreased incentives spending by $94 to $2,285 per vehicle sold; Japanese automakers decreased incentives spending by $28 to $1,784 per vehicle sold; and Korean automakers decreased incentives spending by $27 to $1,571 per vehicle sold.

True Cost of Incentives for the Top Seven Automakers Automaker
November 2010 October 2010 November 2009
Chrysler Group (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep) $2,975 $2,880 $3,190
Ford (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)
$3,206 $3,135 $3,084
General Motors (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet,
GMC)
$3,345 $3,215 $4,361
Honda (Acura, Honda) $1,422 $1,402 $1,296
Nissan (Infiniti, Nissan)
$2,179 $2,213 $2,170
Toyota (Lexus, Scion, Toyota)
$1,948 $2,066 $1,777
Industry Average
$2,470 $2,439 $2,725 In November 2010, the industry's aggregate incentive spending is estimated to have totaled approximately $2.14 billion, down 7.4 percent from October 2010. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors spent an aggregate of $1.3 billion, or 59.3 percent of the total; Japanese manufacturers spent $570 million, or 26.7 percent; European manufacturers spent $193 million, or 9.0 percent; and Korean manufacturers spent $107 million, or 5.0 percent.
"Compared with November last year, GM cut its incentive spend by the largest percentage — 23 percent — of the Big 6 automakers. Toyota, still trying to dig itself out from the sales decline it experienced due to its many recalls this year, has increased incentives most of the Big 6 at 10 percent. Honda, which rides Toyota's coattails, also boosted its incentives by 10 percent on a year-to-year basis," reported Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs in her analysis of November sales trends on AutoObserver.com.
Among vehicle segments, premium sport cars had the highest average incentives, $5,811 per vehicle sold, followed by premium luxury cars at $5,057. Subcompact cars had the lowest average incentives per vehicle sold, $1,272, followed by sport cars at $1,422. Analysis of incentives expenditures as a percentage of average sticker price for each segment shows large cars averaged the highest, 13.2 percent, followed by large trucks at 10.3. Sport cars averaged the lowest with 3.8 percent and luxury SUVs followed with 4.6 percent.
Comparing all brands, in November smart spent the least, $519 per vehicle sold, followed by Subaru at $548. At the other end of the spectrum, Mercury spent the most, $6,927, followed by Cadillac at $5,340. Relative to their vehicle prices, Mercury and Saab spent the most, 23.2 percent and 12.6 percent of sticker price, respectively; while Porsche spent 1.5 and Subaru spent 2.1 percent.
Edmunds.com's monthly True Cost of IncentivesSM (TCISM) report takes into account all automakers' various U.S. incentives programs, including subvented interest rates and lease programs, as well as cash rebates to consumers and dealers. To ensure the greatest possible accuracy, Edmunds.com bases its calculations on sales volume, including the mix of vehicle makes and models for each month, as well as on the proportion of vehicles for which each type of incentive was used.

Just noticed only 1,024 CR-Zs were sold, they need to avg 1,250 a month to meet the 15k a year sales goal. Might be an interesting race.

I just saw a Honda Accord commercial and it claimed it was the best selling car in its class.

BS!

How are these companies allowed to blatantly lie and mislead the uninformed?

We've analyzed the numbers all year and Camry is way ahead. Unless hell froze over and Accord and Camry are no longer competitors?

Like all oft these claims automotive and otherwise take 'em all with a grain of salt. They'd probably say the Accord is in some different class.

If that's the argument they're using, it's a stretch and really just a technicality.
The Accord achieved full-size status just slightly and really isn't much bigger than Camry.

Everyone and their grandmother knows that the Accord and Camry are fierce competitors. If you look up "competition" in the dictionary, they cite Accord and Camry.

The only competitors as fierce is F-150/Silverado, Mustang/Camaro, Corolla/Civic.

It's like the newspaper ads. "The #1 _________ dealer in Chicagoland!!". Who knows what it means - Most likely nothing.

^^ Great chart Mike, thanks for sharing!

- looks like it's time for Smart to exit the US. Total failure.

- Mazda 2 is also a fail. Brand new and it's not selling, and it's not a supply issue at this point. It's ugly, too small, underpowered yet doesn't excel in fuel economy. The Fiesta is a ton better.

- Civic inches out Corolla for top spot - in almost its 6th year! Impressive. Too bad the 2012 Civic will be a step down in design.

- Focus sales are impressive in its final year too. I think many of those are fleet sales though.

- I can't understand Scion's problems. Those are great cars at a very good value. Too bad.

- It looks like VW's strategy in cheapening up the Jetta might be working.

Mercedes-Benz is neck-to-neck with BMW and Lexus in the race to be the 2010 U.S. luxury sales leader.

It's a closer race than we've seen in years. But Mercedes-Benz is pulling back the reins and won't spend wads of money the way it predicts its 2 archrivals will in the last weeks of December.

4 years ago, Lexus was 70,000 units ahead of Mercedes-Benz in the final weeks of the year. Year to date, Lexus is only 5,000 vehicles ahead, said Ernst Lieb, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. BMW was 40,000 ahead at this point in 2007 but now is only beating Mercedes by about 450 vehicles, Lieb said.

“Who will be No. 1?” Lieb wondered at Mercedes' holiday luncheon this week. “It will not be us because the other 2 are pushing so goddamn hard. We will be No. 3.”

According to the Automotive News Data Center, Lexus leads with sales of 201,769 through November, with BMW at 196,833 and Mercedes-Benz at 196,376.

Mercedes is more concerned with improving profits and enhancing the quality of sales and the Mercedes lineup. “We may not be No. 1” in any of the latest big quality surveys, “but we are among the 10 best,” Lieb said.

Mercedes is putting its money into a 3-year ‘Autohaus' dealer facility upgrade program that ends this year. Lieb said 130 of 353 Mercedes dealers have built new or renovated showrooms and 150 dealerships are under construction. Dealers are investing $1.3 billion in upgrades, and Mercedes will pay them a combined $220 million in return. Mercedes dealers who invested in the plan will get $400 per car sold for 3 years and increased vehicle allocations.

Yes it includes all IS models. The brands release sales figures each month and we compile them to discuss.
