Benz's suck period. This one is no different. My c-class has given me below avg reliability. This will be our last MB. Sure MB's give you the 'status' but that's it. New C63's are crap. Lots of problems reported on these beasts.

Insightful post
I had high hopes for the 3rd gen GS, but after 3 years, was left underwhelmed. I really do hope Lexus steps up its efforts for the 4th gen GS...a GS-F would be a nice start.

not trying to change the subject on this thread but what is your opinion on a 2005 C240 Auto with 30,000 miles?
Looking to purchase it but just kinda worried about the maintance cost if its not too reliable at the stage it is in.

I had my fair share of problems with my previous BMW's, but I would never say they SUCK period. I don't know how many MB you've owned, but I'm willing to guess not too many. I agree Lexus is most reliable car I've owned, but that alone doesn't make it the best car on the planet IMO.
drive this car and see if you feel the same way about MB.

+1 on this post. 3rd gen GS nowhere as good as the 2nd IMO.
lexus gizmos are pretty standard these days. nothing high tech.
I think auto parking is pretty damn sweet (that's why Audi commercial's are always attacking it)... i don't know when MB will copy that one, and the 8-speed transmission.

It's a bit ridiculous when Audi has their own system in Europe called..."Audi Park Assist"

I would never say any other car sucks. The C63 has experienced a few issues that can be found on mbworld but nothing that would ever suggest that the car sucks. In fact, it is an amazing super sedan that only has 3 true competitors (and only two that are currently produced).
I certainly agree with you that reliability isn't the defining criteria for a great overall car. But conversely, a great track or performance car isn't the best on the planet if it spends half of it's time in for service.
Thank you for the pic that you posted of the new Benz.
I had never seen that pic b4 and I love and hate you for it. For one, I think that is easily the most beautiful car that I have seen for quite some time, imho. But after showing it to the wife she actually agrees for a change...and seems to think it should be her next ride.
Better start buying more lottery tickets, I guess.

Hopefully once you tell her the price tag (Base Price: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series - Rumored Above $300,000), she'll come back down to earth

Honestly, it depends on which segment. I probably would pick a IS over C class Benz. Other than that, forget.
I think these two car are very comparable, I had my car and my wife's car in for service at same time and had both C300 and IS250 as loaners. I couldn't decide which I liked better.
Only Lexus I choose over MB (for sure) is LX570 over GL550.
Some of you mentioned that GS does not sell. Well, I don't think its the car. IMHO, Lexus made a mistake by adding all the features GS has into an ES. So, Lexus is pretty much offering 2 identical cars, where one is $10,000 cheaper. This is what's killing the sales I think. They should either stop making ES or make ES really cost less than GS by removing the features. Germans are smarter, they dont make 2 cars of the same class.
Lexus is the best selling luxury car company in america. You find them at every stoplight. There's nothing special about owning one
Apples to oranges. You are talking about entire brands. I am talking about individual models. You do NOT see LS460s at every stoplight. You do NOT see E63 AMG at every stoplight. However, you might see a traditional E-class at every stoplight if you were in the right city.
