2) Why did the IS 300 have a 5 speed manual instead of a 6 speed from the IS 200?
1) The 3-liter engine was good enough to meet US emission (LEV) standards
2) Not sure if this is the answer, but the 6-speed lacked low down torque, which was needed to transmit power to the factory 16" and optional 17" tires.
Interesting fact about the IS200: At the 1999 Detroit show, it was originally planned to be sold in the US, in the middle of the year 2000.

Ya'll pretty much got it.
1. Lexus has always gone over the top with research. Their research in America indicated any 4 cylinder luxury badged car is not really considered a luxury car by luxury car owners. So Lexus stuffed the 6 cylinder from the Supra into the IS, as to not hurt the brands image with this entry level luxury car. So the 200hp Altezza I-4 (top of the line model) was out of the question. The IS 200 I-6 only makes about 160hp in Europe. Again, no Lexus has ever been a 4-cylinder, even in Europe.
2. The 6 speed in the 200hp high revving Altezza didn't have to handle the torque of the 2JZ. Lexus went back and forth with this topic, as 6 speed were becoming more and more common in the industry. Lexus though, didn't want to take the chance at having tranny problems as the cars got older and the torque wore more and more on the tranny. Thus the IS got a tried and trusty 5 speed manual.
