Just about... They decided the engine would have to be a V8 with displacement between 3.5 and 4.0 liters. The first engine began development in 1984 as a 3.5 liter V8, and was scrapped in 1986 for a 3.8 liter V8, which was subsequently done away with just a few months later and the 4.0 we all know today came along.
Obviously neither of the previous engines were offered to the public or used in any other car.

LS400 = 0-60 in 7.9 sec., 1/4 mile in 15.9 sec.
ES250 (5-speed manual) = 0-60 in 9.2 sec., 1/4 mile in 17.0 sec.
