Please, your input. We have the greatest country, the money, we love cars. All I see is them trying to sell us more and faster cars, and no where to drive them. All I see is them trying to lock us down with tickets, speed traps and other crap.
I say, build US a damn Nurburgring. Why not????????
Considering the number of fatal accidents caused by poor driving habits, I doubt we will ever see a national highway with triple digit speedlimits. It's also considerably cheaper to build a road that doesn't have to meet the strictest tolerances to make it suitable for high speed driving. Until you impose the type of regulations on driving habits that Germany does there's no chance of an all-American Autobahn.
They do. At least they did a few years ago, I'm pretty sure the Corvette clubs in Illinois ruined it for the rest of us. There was a no speed limit highway in Montana for a few years. Not sure if its still there.
There was an hour Autobahn special on TLC or Discovery Channel a few weeks ago(maybe months). How it began, how its maintained and why other countries dont have it. I wish I remember what they siad, but I was to drunk to remember anything that early morning.
It was really interesting and hopefully they run that special again. They answered all of our questions.
As far as a Ring similar to what is available in Europe, I would love for someone to build it. I would definitely drive on it. But a lot of people in Europe already die on that course.

On the Ring it's a handfull of people on a bad year, Mostly bikers.
The Ring is actually a toll road and everything that is allowed on the road is also allowed on the Ring.
It is not uncommen to see a bus full of tourists doing a lap. Very dangerous if you ask me but that's the rules.
People on I-95 here can't drive properly with 55 MPH speed limits let alone triple-digit ones. Sad to say no amount of driver training will help most of them.
The problem with driving in the US is you only need to show that you can competently operate a car. You don't need to know how to interact with your car, other drivers, and the road. IE, the curve says 45 mph, you are driving a loaded hummer, and damit you are going to do 45 cuz that is the max speed of the curve.
if you think about it, as ntran said you only need to show that you can operate a car, you just walk in and 1-5 hrs later you got an ID card that allows you to jump onto a 6 lane hwy as soon as you leave the place.. In Germany, only a driving school can grant an applicant admission to take the final drivers-license tests.. driving schools often recommend that applicants take a number of driving lessons before the official test in order to become acquainted with German driving rules..The practical, on-the-road training time has to include night driving, autobahn experience, in-town driving, and a multitude of other driving situations... the test for a German driver's license includes questions about the mechanical aspects of an automobile, in addition to the usual examination on the rules of the road.... and they are very strict about rules i.e. Slow moving vehicles must always move to the right, and faster vehicles may pass on the left only only exception is when both lanes are moving slowly <under 35mph>.. yet here in the states thats a rule that is posted in several places on the hwy, yet prob 5% or less of drivers actually give a %$%$ about it.. I think until that changes, a high speed hwy like that wouldnt be a good idea
